I wouldn't say 'far'. He is still the second biggest star of his era, after SCSA. As for the last decade and a half, only Cena, Austin, HHH, HBK, and Taker are in his league. I'd rank him in the top ten. If it counts for anything, it'd look a little like this:

1. Flair
2. Austin
3. Hogan
4. Taker
5. HBK
6. Steamboat
7. Rock
8. HHH
9. Cena
10. Macho Man

But that's just me. And that's from an unbiased perspective, because with the way that I feel about Hulk as a person, and because I think Shawn is also a bit overrated, I'm obviously not listing this by preference. I'm looking at it from a legacy perspective, and that's how I see the rankings as far as that's concerned.
Honestly I'll take that. Even as a self-proclaimed Rocky hater, I'll give him at least that much due.

And TBF when I said far, I meant something like 7th.

It just drives me crazy when he or WWE imply he was bigger than Austin who clearly dominated that era.

Also if we're going strictly WWE, Flair wouldn't be number 1, it would be Austin. But I concur if we mean WWE/WCW.

WWE really missed the boat by not having either Miz or McIntyre turn face. They could have just had somebody injure Khali like they did in 2010 for SS.

Austin didn't dominate the era. Dominating is taking everything and making everything else look irrelevant. Rock wasn't far behind Austin in popularity.

Fuck Bret Hart.

Nah, he'd be top 15, but I wouldn't accept him replacing any of the top ten guys I listed. Especially not Mach.

Sigh.

Seriously watch that era again. Almost EVERYTHING that happened was tied to the Austin/McMahon feud. Even Rock's shoot to popularity.

That's probably true.

Only because Lord Tensai will probably debut.

Indeed. When Rock turned heel at Survivor Series '98, it was in the middle of the Austin/McMahon angle.

Basically, Austin made The Rock's career. Rock couldn't exist without Austin (at least, not the Rock we know)... however, Austin had already reached extreme heights through Bret Hart, so Rock can't be credited with making Austin, but Austin can be credited with making The Rock..

I don't care who created who. The point of this conversation is who was the star of the attitude era. The Rock got enormous pops like Stone Cold. People flocked to arenas to see Rock like stone cold. And people wouldn't stop chanting Rock's name like Stone Cold.

Still, Stone Cold was responsible for it. And anyways, there's a difference, Viper. They did both achieve enormous fame and I don't really think it's worth arguing about, but everything that happened in that time frame, in the main event scene, revolved around Stone Cold. The only time anyone was relevant in the main even slot was when DX had their moments, which excluded Stone Cold. The Rock was rarely ever doing anything that wasn't somehow linked to Stone Cold or someone who Stone Cold was also linked to.
