WWE United States Championship
The current WWE United States Champion aka the "Bulgarian Brute" Rusev and his wife/manager Lana. Weren't very happy about the fact that he wasn't even featured at Summerslam. They would spend the weeks following the event bitching and moaning, at every chance they got.
On an episode of Monday Night RAW, they were cut off midway through their tirade by the arrival of Neville, Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. The trio all put their names forward for a chance at the gold and more importantly to shut his mouth. MNR GM Mick Foley made an appearance and made a fatal four way match for the gold at Clash of the Champions

Like the WWE Universal Women's Championship fka the WWE Women's Championship before it. The then WWE Tag Team Championship went under a name change becoming the WWE Universal Tag Team Championships. The titles changed hands at Summerslam when the Good Brothers beat the New Day(c).
The duo of Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens aka Y2KO wanted a shot at the gold. As did the former champions so RAW GM Mick Foley made a triple threat tag team match for Clash of the Champions.

Dean Ambrose(c) walked into Summerslam 2016 as the reigning World Heavyweight Champion. When the dust had settled he walked out of the event the same way he walked in. After he narrowly defeated the "Phenomenal" AJ Styles in an awesome match.
In the weeks and months following Summerslam his aka Ambrose's way forward with his championship reign in tact became increasingly difficult. As Styles claimed he had unfinished business with Ambrose at the World Heavyweight Championship.
Then their was the "Show Off" Dolph Ziggler who become the next in line for a shot at the gold. By defeating Randy Orton at the Backlash ppv event. TNS GM Daniel Bryan announced Ambrose(c) VS Ziggler for the gold at No Mercy.

To become the inaugural Women's World Champion, she would retain the gold against both Nikki Bella and Naomi on episodes of Tuesday Night Smackdown. She would be met with an old rival in the form of Becky Lynch who stated she would leave TNS if she lost the title match.

The then WWE Intercontinental Champion aka the Miz(c) retained the gold against Apollo Crews at Summerslam. And continued as the reigning champion until the TNS exclusive ppv event Backlash.
Where he was unsuccessful in defending the gold against an old rival in John Cena. The now former champion aka Miz attacked Cena on an episode of the blue brand show and left him laying. Making it abundantly clear he wanted the gold back. A rematch was made official for the No Mercy ppv event.

American Alpha aka the duo of Chad Gable and Jason Jordan made history at the Backlash ppv event. By defeating the rest of blue brand's tag team division in a battle royal to become the first team to hold the reinstated World Tag Team Championship.
They were challenged by the pair of Aiden English and Simon Gotch aka the Vaudevillians for a shot at the gold at No Mercy. The champions were more than happy to accept the challenge.
