But for real maybe open sign up on release or a little after and see how much you get? Cos if you get plenty of people there's no reason to cut the potential league length for everyone...

Well, actually I wouldn't mind it being after Christmas since that'll have me avoid the Christmas rush in work, in which I'd likely have 0 time for the league.
