Aliyah out of action for a month
Aliyah picked up a slight knock on a recent house show ruling her out of action for around a month. She was expected to be part of the two-night NXT Takeover Stand and Deliver. It is unknown what part she was going to play and if she is being considered for a post-WM call-up.
Roadblock PPV Recap:
Universal title elimination chamber match: Aleister Black © vs Roman Reigns vs Kevin Owens vs Seth Rollins vs AJ Styles vs Finn Balor
Aleister Black was able to survive the fatal 4 way at the Royal Rumble and stayed Universal Champion. Buddy Murphy was the main pinned in the fatal 4-way but since Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns were not pinned within the match, they got given spots inside the chamber. The remaining three spots would be earned via qualifying matches as Finn Balor defeated Edge, AJ Styles defeated Jacob Fatu (via countout) and Seth Rollins defeated Matt Riddle. In the lead-up to Roadblock, we have seen The Church of Seth Rollins, The O.C. and The Bloodline all colliding leading to a lot of chaos on Smackdown.
Owens and Black have formed an unlikely friendship over the last couple of months fighting against this. Meanwhile, Finn Balor and AJ Styles have been at loggerheads with both disagreeing with each other’s leadership and how The O.C. should take care of business. The winner of the Elimination Chamber will walk into WrestleMania 37 as Universal Champion to take on 2021 Royal Rumble winner Daniel Bryan, who will escape the chamber and clear the last Roadblock before WrestleMania?
WWE Women title number one contender's elimination chamber match: Bianca Bel-Air vs Taynara Conti vs Ember Moon vs Sasha Banks vs Bayley vs Xia Li
In the other Elimination Chamber match at Roadblock, we will find out the number one contender for the WWE Women’s title at WrestleMania 37. Xia Li would get the first spot inside the Chamber defeating Marina Shafir on the Royal Rumble pre-show. Xia would soon be joined in the match by The Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection with the tag team champions each earning a spot in the match. Bayley would defeat Franky Monet and Sasha Banks defeated Millie McKenzie.
Bianca Belair would see an old rivalry resurface with Sonya Deville returning at the Royal Rumble. The two women would settle their differences with Belair earning a spot inside the structure. Ember Moon meanwhile would take on Carmella and beat the former Women’s Champion to earn her spot in the match. The final qualifying match would see Taynara Conti defeat Billie Kay (who is currently trying her hand as a singles wrestler with Peyton Royce on the shelf).
Once all the places within the match had been locked up, we would hear a lot of talk from the entrants wanting to finally defeat the current WWE Women’s Champion Asuka. Ember Moon would gloat and remind everyone that she won the WWE Women’s title at last year’s WrestleMania to become champion. On the final Smackdown Belair ended up brawling with The House of Couture and then Bianca Belair whilst Conti scored an upset win over Bayley. Who will walk out of the chamber to fight for the WWE Women’s title at WrestleMania 37 and will it be Asuka they face?
WWE Women's Title match: Asuka (c) vs Naomi
Asuka has stood atop the Smackdown Women’s division ever since she came back from her break. She defeated Ronda Rousey, bringing her 3rd women’s title reign to an end. Since then, Asuka has been willing to take on all challengers and prove that no one is truly ready for Asuka. Naomi though instead of going about things the normal way, chooses to sneak attack Asuka and leave her laid out. Asuka would miss a couple of weeks of TV leading Naomi to issue a challenge for Roadblock.
Asuka would soon reappear and accept the match on the condition she would get a match with Naomi’s tag team partner: Tamina. Noami would accept but Tamina would soon regret Naomi's accepting on her behalf as Asuka would go out of her way to injure the Bloodline member. Asuka would make it clear on the remaining episodes of Smackdown that this won’t just be about keeping her WWE Women’s title but about hurting Naomi to teach her a lesson. Will Naomi become a 3-time Women’s Champion or will Asuka get her revenge?
WWE Tag team titles match: Heavy Machinery (c) vs The Usos
Heavy Machinery managed to win back the WWE Tag Team titles on Smackdown nearly 2 months ago in a ladder match. In their 2nd reign with the gold, they had their second title defense against the Mysterios managing to pick up the win. However, after the match finished, Jey Uso made his return from injury and with the help of his twin brother Jimmy Uso and Jacob Fatu, they laid waste to both teams and stood tall over everyone, sending a clear message they wanted the tag team titles back!
The Usos would carry on sending messages to Heavy Machinery when they faced The Mysterios in tag team action on Smackdown Live and picked up the victory over the father/son duo but not before injuring Dominic Mysterio. On the penultimate episode of Smackdown before Roadblock Jey Uso pinned Otis Dozovic in a multi-man tag, further strengthening their case for the tag belts. Can Heavy Machinery overcome the refocused Usos or will The Usos show why they are arguably the best team of the modern era?
United States title match: Chad Gable © vs Karrion Kross
Chad Gable managed to win back his United States title from Finn Balor to start 2021 off. Chad Gable has looked to defend his title against anyone willing to challenge him and recently issued an open challenge answered by Nathan Frazer. Gable managed to retain his United States title but after the match, he was a victim of an attack by Karrion Kross. The devil of the Church made it clear he was coming after Gable’s title and wanted to bring it back to the Church? Can Chad Gable survive the devil’s wrath?
Buddy Murphy vs Daniel Bryan
On Smackdown last year Boddy Murphy shocked a lot of people when he defeated Daniel Bryan in a huge upset. Daniel Bryan would reflect on this loss and another one to Shinsuke, saying that he knows he doesn’t have long left in his career so wanted to win the Royal Rumble before ending his career. Daniel Bryan would go on to do that from the number 1 spot breaking the record for the longest time in a Royal Rumble match. Bryan would speak to The New Day and make the call to challenge for the Universal title at WrestleMania 37.
Daniel Bryan would then fight Shinsuke Nakamura on Smackdown and pick up the win avenging his loss, leading to an angry Buddy Murphy to attack him after the match. Buddy would say he attacked Byran to make sure he wouldn’t be forgotten about after his loss at the Royal Rumble. Byran would very quickly agree to the match at Roadblock saying he wanted to fight Buddy and avenge his loss. Buddy would get paranoid about Bryan forgetting about him on the go-home show which Bryan would deny. Will Buddy score a 2nd over Daniel Bryan or will the 2021 Royal Rumble winner prevail?
Edge and Rey Mysterio vs The Ungovernables
Edge came into 2021 feuding with the Bloodline, with single losses to both Roman Reigns and Jacob Fatu in the lead-up to the Royal Rumble. Edge would regroup and look to enter the Royal Rumble but, in the end, would fall short of earning the chance to win back the Universal title at WrestleMania 37. He would then look to qualify for the Elimination Chamber against Finn Balor but would be taken out after a ref bump by Dominik Dijakovic and Shinsuke Nakamura!
It was shown earlier in the night that Zelina Vega was passed a bunch of money and a clear task by Roman to make sure Edge stayed out of his way. Edge would make it clear he would get revenge on the pair before turning to the Bloodline as well. Shawn Michaels would make a tag team match for the PPV telling Edge to find a tag team partner to fight The Ungovernables. Rey Mysterio, an old friend of Edge’s meanwhile, would be having his own problems and says his son was taken out in front of him by The Usos.
Rey and Edge were speaking to each other in a trainer’s room whilst Dominik Mysterio was getting checked out. They would soon both be attacked by The Ungovernables looking to get at Edge and this would make up Rey’s mind, agreeing to team up with his former tag team partner. Both are multiple-time tag team champions and even former tag team champions with each other. They promise once they are done with The Ungovernables they are coming for The Usos tag team titles or no tag team titles.
Braun Strowman vs Jacob Fatu
Jacob Fatu has been on a tear ever since debuting on Smackdown in the Autumn as part of the Bloodline and even got the most eliminations inside the 2021 Royal Rumble including the Monster Among Men. Braun and Fatu would collide several times on Smackdown with Jacob Fatu injuring Braun and crushing his ribs. Braun came out this week on Smackdown to fight Fatu but what state will he be in at Roadblock? And who will prove to be the biggest monster on Smackdown?
Damian Priest vs Noam Dar
Damian Priest made his main roster debut entering the Royal Rumble on behalf of his friend Bad Bunny, immediately taking out Noam Dar who attacked Bad Bunny during his concert at the Royal Rumble. Noam Dar would not take this well, sneak attacking Damian Priest on several occasions. Priest would get some revenge, battering Dar’s tag team partner Kenny Williams on Smackdown. Now Priest looks to batter Dar at Roadblock, will Dar be able to escape the reckoning that awaits him?
Pre-show: Money in the Bank qualifying match: Matt Riddle vs Nathan Frazer
On a recent edition of Smackdown, Matt Riddle challenged the youngest member of the Church of Seth Rollins to a match on the Roadblock pre-show. Nathan would accept the challenge (with the blessing of his leader Seth Rollins). Shawn Michaels would then make it for a spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match. Will Riddle get his hands on the briefcase or will Nathan follow in his mentor’s footsteps?
Pre-show: Money in the Bank Qualifying match: Carmella vs Franky Monet
On the go-home Smackdown, Franky Monet asked Shawn Michaels to be treated like a star. Shawn said if she wanted to be treated like a star, she needed to prove she was one and gave her a match against two-time Money in the Bank winner Carmella! Who will qualify for the Women’s Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 37?
