An expounded upon explanation of the previous argument

David Gauthier argues once a person intends drinking the poison one cannot entertain ideas of not drinking it
The rational outcome of your deliberation tomorrow morning is the action that will be part of your life going as well as possible, subject to the constraint that it be compatible with your commitment—in this case, compatible with the sincere intention that you form today to drink the toxin. And so the rational action is to drink the toxin.

I do agree simply knowing makes it so much harder to ever intend to drink the poison in the first place and most wouldn't be able to (except for the ones that simply do drink obviously). But I can still certainly imagine scenarios where people would have a legit change of mind still that I don't think can ever be ruled as impossible lol they aren't probable ones, no, just possible

counter argument: I wake up violently ill and no longer think it's a good idea to add a toxin to the mix

"God spoke to me in a dream and said not to drink it" would be a great one

the simplest one would just be "I got cold feet" which would not be a lie either

I agree, but to an extent I think this can fall under the argument Grim posted. I imagine a lot of people would claim to chicken out that were always chickening out in their mind and then some would think they're brave until it's right in front of them. I believe it would be the hardest to judge

Now that I'm looking at it the argument isn't against the idea that you can have a genuine change of heart, but that you cannot sincerely intend to do both actions at the same time.

Yes this i do agree with, and it might be why it's just also not the best hypothetical to get the point across lol I think it's impossible to simultaneously intend both, you would have to have a change after the first deadline. The human mind cannot operate like that (again except maybe sociopaths)

Yeah it's kind of easily exploitable, what if someone steals the poison after the first deadline (I'd hope the rich asshole has safeguards in place but we don't know)
