William Regal will reportedly start back with WWE in early 2023.

According to a report from PWInsider, Regal is currently finalizing a new deal with WWE and is expected to return to the promotion after the new year in a backstage role.

Regal's situation was addressed by our own Dave Meltzer on Saturday's edition of Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer noted that there should be something on AEW Dynamite this week that addresses Regal's departure.

"I believe that there is something that's going to be on Wednesday's show, if it doesn't change, where there will be something addressing certain things. That story is supposed to keep going in some way but [Regal] is going back to WWE."

Meltzer would continue to say he's heard multiple stories regarding Regal's contractual status with AEW.

"I've had so many different people tell me so many different stories. The primary source story is that his contract was short-term. The WWE side says that he had an out."

Regal made his AEW debut at Revolution on March 6, 2022.

"Does he sign a nine-month deal? It doesn't sound right but that's the closest thing to what I would say is official," Meltzer continued. "Others say that he had an out or Tony gave him an out."

Very odd contract situation but he's back where he belongs. Curious to see where he lands backstage though, whether it's back based in everything NXT or if he does main roster stuff now Trips is running those.

Don't ask who the fuck this is, I don't know.

These fucking dirt sheet guys all come out of nowhere....and with check marks. Shows how special those are before Musk said gimme $8 and you get a checkmark.

Tbf Lio Rush and Bobby Fish both had very short deals so maybe that's what he signed Regal to due to his age or gave him an option on a longer deal?

wasn't it just revealed he signed a 3 year deal with AEW? I guess that was false.

BCC was a massive disappointment imo.

Firstly it took Bryan Danielson away from the mainevent, they had that stupid feud with Jericho's old group, tried cramming Wheeler Yuta down our throats and made Moxley a champion.

Danielson should've beat Hangman Page when he had his feud with him, and it also would've avoided the whole CM Punk debacle since Page wouldn't have been working with Punk and pissing him off and breeding bitterness from his promo.

And Regal should've been backstage trying to to teach these green kids on how to act.

Hard to say but I would be very surprised if someone like Regal and all the different roles he could have filled was only offered a 9ish month / till the end of the year kind of deal.

To me it just feels like a case of he wants out and he's been granted it because he's going to be (i'm assuming) back behind the scenes and not on TV every week like a Malakai etc who also wanted out but were refused.

I mean Malakai was more to take time off for his mental health and he made it clear he wasn't leaving AEW in his own statements.

Regal leaving WWE from AEW honestly I'm torn because get your bag indeed Regal but what does WWE really have in store for you honestly? Regal was used so perfectly I thought in AEW no way WWE uses him in the same matter.

Well however you wanna split hairs, he asked for a release and was denied it whatever his motives were but i'm not gonna go back and forth on that.

I’m going to miss his flirting with Excalibur on commentary, but whatever makes him happy and if being back in WWE makes him happy then fair play. His son is in NXT as well, so I’m sure that plays some part in it, as well as his relationship with Triple H.
