NXT World Champion: EL IDOLO!
NXT World Tag Team Champions: Undisputed Era
NXT Woman's Champion: Ember Moon
United Kingdom Champion: Pete Dunne
NXT Episode 288
February 21st, 2018
Center Stage Theater: Atlanta, Georgia
TONIGHT: ALMAS/GARGANO - TITLE VS. CAREER!
The Velveteen Dream vs. No Way Jose
Good Dream showcase, Jose is doing the same stuff he's been doing. It's the classic sense of the old guy not adapting to the new age NXT so everyone has passed him by. And tbf it's not like he was ever good enough anyway, but that 2016 lazy old style doesn't cut it anymore. Purple Rainmaker ends it.
After the match; Dream says his name is at the tip of everyone tongue tonight, and if you can't see that, then he doesn't have time for ya.
Backstage: Vega is pumping up Almas for his match tonight.
Backstage: GM Regal announces the return of the Dusty Classic, he says the winners will face the tag team champions at TakeOver New Orleans. And this tournament starts in 2 weeks.
Venessa Borne vs. Nikki Cross
Cross showcase, swinging neckbreaker ends it.
Recap of the Black/Dain segment from last week airs.
Next Week, Baszler vs. Sane
Title vs. Career Match: Andrade Almas (w/Zelina Vega) vs. Johnny Gargano (w/Candice LeRae)
Again the champion comes out first smh. They will never top Philly but this is still super good for TV. Usual good stuff but super edited, like they cut all the awesome fast-paced counter wrestling stuff at the start and kinda go right into Candice and Vega brawling to the back leaving it 1on1. Gargano hits a dive, but when he goes for the slingshot DDT, Almas blocks and hits the apron backdrop move to take over. Almas works the arm it's good, I guess 2018 is the year of working the arms huh? Plus it's Almas so he doesn't stick with the arm fully, just when he feels like it before going to strikes to hitting one of his combo moves directed to the chest and back. 2nd break cuts out Gargano's comeback and they go into their usual dope back and forth, Almas hits the one-armed bucklebomb and follows up with the double knees, but Gargano kicks out. He then goes for the Hammerlock DDT, but Gargano keeps ramming him back into the turnbuckles, awesome spot Johnny goes for it a 3rd time but Almas uses his speed to avoid and Johnny goes shoulder first into the ringpost. Another awesome moment, they begin fighting on the apron, but Almas gets back into the ropes, so Johnny goes for the slingshot spear but again Almas avoids and locks in the Gargano escape but Johnny fights outs. This is so well built with Almas being in control here for so long like he's using Gargano's emotions and predictability against him, so he can stay one step ahead. But Gargano does have counters out of the stuff that worked against him at Philly like he avoids the running knees on the apron, and he avoids the double stomp to the apron. That then sparks his comeback and starts hitting big high-risk moves for near-falls. They trade forearms back and forth until the ref gets bumped on accident. GARGANO THEN LOCKS IN THE STRETCH..........BUT CIAMPA COMES THROUGH THE CROWD AND HITS GARGANO IN THE BACK WITH A CRUTCH. That allows Almas to hit the Hammerlock DDT and cover for the win. 4-0, EL IDOLO! ***
After the match, Almas and Vega celebrate and leave as Candice comes back out to help her man up. They have a good 3 minute long "emotional" slow walk to the back. BUT AS THE SHOW GOES OFF THE AIR THIS IS THE LAST SHOT WE SEE.
