Tonight, we saw Umaga talk for the first time. Needless to say, it felt a little awkward. It may have just been me, but the voice just didn’t click at first. I’m not gonna close the book on it yet though. It wasn’t that bad, and it was his first time talking under the Umaga character. With a bit of work, it should be better.
But do you like the decision to have him talk?
I for one, do. When I heard it in the spoilers, I was unsure. But it’s actually needed. In order for him to have feuds that are any good, he needs to talk eventually. He can’t just rely on randomly attacking people all the time, and not having any explanation. Seeing as managers seem to be a thing of the past, he needs to talk. Hopefully they continue this without losing any of his past traits.
Thoughts?

Umaga speaking English?

Is it just me or does it ruin the character? If he has to speak actual words, I say pull a Khali and have him speak Samoan with a translator. To me going from "habbbaooogalllboogaa" to "I'm issuing a challenge to you for a match at Extreme Rules," is kind of 0_o.

At first i thought oh man that crap. But when i finally thought about it. Yeah it's a good way to go. He is a really good for a big guy better and more agile than most big guys. Granted it was out of the blue, After god knows how long talking gibberish, He now has a voice bit damn strange. But if he is good on the mic then I'm all for it. It may help elevate him a bit. IMO to get high you need more than in ring skills. So him working the mic is a plus for him.

It did seem rather odd hearing his voice, but I'm not sure how much of that to do with the fact that he was merely talking (rather than ranting).... On this evidence I hope they keep his talking to a minimum, have him talk somewhat broken English and stick to the ranting in Samoan for the best part.

He could play up to it a bit... Y'know, only talking English when HE wants to. That way he can still retain a little of the mystique that he had thus far.

I hope they don't plan on full speaking promos now that he's spoken.

I was expecting it to be more broken, that was clear as day. He could've read The Shining and make it sound fasinating.

I think it's something that Umaga's character has always really needed. I'm a huge fan of the guy and I think he's an incredible in-ring performer. However, if he was ever going to advance any further in the WWE he'd definately need to become more story line friendly. Not being able to cut promos I think was really holding him back. This is literally the first time we've seen him on the mic (that we could understand)... so it may take some time for him to hone his skills. But in the long run it's definately a good thing for him.

He sounds like a bootleged kane. But what no body knows is that umaga was acually in the wwe before he was umaga he was in 3 minute warning

I would rephrase that if i was you and it's pretty naive of you to say say such a thing as NO ONE KNOWS. Because i knew that, and I'm surmising 99.9% of proper wwe fans will also know that fact also.

But back on topic. I like the fact he is talking now. Yes it does take away some of the mystique of his character and the whole Samoan theme. But if he can actually work the Mic OK then why not give him Mic time. He does not have to talk all the time just at appropriate times when needed. But yeah i see this as at a plus for him.

Yeah maybe that was worded wrong, but I'm sure a majority of people know thay by now. When he 1st debuted maybe not, but by now yeah.

As for the topic, I liked the idea of him talking. He wont go any higher up the card without being able to talk as what someone said above, managers are the thing of the past in WWE. I just don't like the way they did it. He was a wild un tamed non-english speaking samoan, now he all of a sudden knows how to speak english, and speak it well at that. They could have came at it in a better way.

That was a letdown. It was too sudden and the accent didn't suit.

Well technically, he's always UNDERSTOOD English, just because he never speaks doesn't mean he isn't multi-linguistic.

It would've been a whole lot better if it was broken, at least taken out 'it will' and stuff like that. Speaking in the third person would've been cool too, like the Incredible Hulk (UMAGA SMASH! Who wouldn't enjoy that?)

Guess it's really sink or swim now. If they keep him as the silent but destructive samoan beast and only have him speak when completely necessary, along with heavy panting and short sentences like this week, it could work and I'd go as far to say he'll be in the world title picture by the year's end. If he becomes some kind of Samoan philosopher, he's dead.

His wording was too good, 'I'm issuing a challenge..' was too 'smart' so to speak. Like everyone's saying it should have been more broken and simple.
