Wikipedia is usually a good reference for title histories, usually when shit looks weird on there, I go check and it's bc the company just did some weird shit lol and yeah it has the current IWGP world title as a new one, not just a new design or rename. The original one doesn't have the "world" it's just IWGP Heavyweight and it is retired
Yeah, from what I understand, they took the heavyweight and the intercontinental they merged them both, both retired, and then the new belt carries on the spiritual legacy of the two hence why it’s now called the world heavyweight championship. But it’s a brand new belt.

You can technically change the name and design but keep the title history, look at what TNA did with the Global/Legends/whatever the fuck they named it lol

So really the point is, have fun with the clusterfuck of wrestling titles and these nerd discussions when we get these every couple years or so bc they're inevitable lol shit never makes sense
This is very true. The funny thing is TNA didn’t even change the design of the belt. They just changed the tape over the original word and kept changing that.

"Spiritual legacy" is the same shit WWE says about the current WHC and the now retired second cruiserweight title too bc they started new lineages with them but wanted the old belts legacy for the new belts still lol

Yeah, don’t get me started on how stupid that is. Especially when it’s entirely possible to just revive the original belt like they did with the United States championship in 2003 carries on the original United States championship lineage.

The legends championship was supposedly a very expensive championship and I can see why it is one of the better looking belts in their history so I can see why they didn’t wanna just get rid of it but yeah because of how expensive the embroidering of the world legends was they just taped over it and then wrote over it TV or global or whatever it was at the time.

Not as bad as what you referenced earlier when they retired the OG women's and tag titles for newer lineages when they unified them in 2010. Why would you do that

The tag titles is funny bc the official history recognizes both titles after unification for like 5 more reigns until they finally made new belts, then they just continued the 2002 ones, which are now the new OGs since we have a newer one from 2016

And never made any sense to me, especially when the original women’s championship was probably their most historic belt they had because it existed I think prior to their heavyweight.

I think they retconned Moolah's NWA reign from the 50s that was like 50 smaller reigns to be the start so technically it would have yeah.

Wait, do they? I never noticed that.

Yeah, the belts are funny because the both started out in 2002 and 2016 as SmackDown belts because Raw won the tag titles in the first and second brand splits and now the 2002 SmackDown one is the Raw tag title.

They’ll keep every belt, except for the one that has the most history. I was worried for a second they were going to do the same thing with the universal, but thankfully they didn’t.

Didn't roman do this for like 3 fucking years lol

And tna Kenny too
Some of it was before they made one title to represent both. Once they did, it was kinda dumb to have him with the three.

Kenny though was different as they didn't have one title to represent the two titles from TNA while also keeping the two titles. Though I do think the TNA one at the time wasn't official so I guess it could maybe ne comparable.

To be fair The reason why there was an impact and a TNA version of the belt around Omega is because they were originally supposed to revive both belts entirely and have a TNA and an impact brand but it just didn’t come to fruition because of Covid and other reasons.

Yeah when they made the SmackDown tag titles in 2016, the raw titles were the 2002 ones. They were swapped so I have no idea if the 2002 WWE tag titles are the current tag titles or if they've now hilariously became the "world tag titles" like their counterparts in 2002 were bc the names are now back to that

I’m probably the only person in the world that absolutely hates the WWE versus world branding, but I’ll let it go if they can do me one solid and never move the belts. The raw belts should be permanently the world belts.
