notes

  • Tokyo Joshi will hold the 4 quarter final matches of the Tokyo Princess Cup in Shinjuku FACE along with 3 other matches.
  • The match order is subject to be different from how I have listed it.
  • Princess Cup bouts are 1 fall affairs with no time limit. There are no “over the top rope” rules in this tournament. Thus, wins are attained by pinfall, submission, referee stoppage or disqualification.
  • From the 3rd Princess Cup onward, winners have traditionally gone on to challenge the current PuriPuri champion to a match. This year, it’s likely that the championship match will take place at WrestlePrincess II on October 9th
  • The main event for this show will likely be the Tokyo Princess Cup quarterfinal match between Miyu Yamashita and Mizuki. Miyu is the current PuriPuri champ and Mizuki has won the Princess Cup the last 2 years, so this seems the most likely match to be slotted into the main event. These two have very different builds and approaches to wrestling. Miyu is slightly taller, and has a more muscular build, especially in the legs as most of her offense is built around her kicks. She has a number of powerful slams and submissions that she has built up over the years including a powerful German suplex, a painful cobra clutch and her signature attitude adjustment but eventually her game always goes back to her kicks. Mizuki on the other hand is very slim agile and flexible, she’s extremely good at ducking, dodging, countering and wriggling her way out of situations somehow always managing to shift the momentum of a match to her favor. Because of her smaller mass, Mizuki has become practiced at throwing her bodyweight into her moves or using her opponent’s momentum and bodyweight against them. You can see her bodyweight being used frequently in her crossbody attacks, drop kicks, double stomps and of course her Uzuame special attack. You can see her use of opponents’ momentum, strength or bodyweight in moves such as her aquamarine and cutie special. The two are currently 1 and 1 in singles matches. Miyu won their first confrontation in 2017 but Mizuki knocked Miyu out of the 2019 Princess Cup in the first round on her way to her eventual victory. This match will break the tie but who will win?
  • Rika and Shoko will likely secure the semifinal slot on the show. These are two of Tokyo Joshi’s longest tenured veterans and have similar accolades. Each has been PuriPuri champion with relatively short reigns of only 2 defenses. Each woman has also been part of a team that held the Princess Tag belts. Shoko’s team was the inaugural holders of the titles, while Rika’s held the belts for the longest number of days (though that’s primarily because of the pandemic). These two have only met in singles competition three times with one being under unusual rules (5 minute time limit 2 count falls etc). In regular singles matches they are also 1 and 1. This is another tie breaker with major ramifications. Shoko excels at mat wrestling and high speed attacks. She has few power moves but many moves that chain into submissions or pins. She’s most dangerous on the ground or moving but less effective in straight striking battles or trading attacks. Rika has a number of ways to hit you including various submissions, slams and her favored hip attacks but she’s at her most dangerous when she’s able to do targeted leg work. If Rika is able to take out Shoko’s legs she will likely be able to control the pace of the match and keep Shoko from effectively using her speed. However, if Shoko is able to avoid leg whips and reverse any submissions she encounters, Rika will be in trouble.
  • The Up Up Girls debuted on January 4th 2018. Yuki Aino debuted on May 3rd 2018. Because their debuts are so close together Miu, Hikari and Yuki have all developed rivalries with one another. Miu and Yuki specifically have clashed in a number of tag matches and have fought over the Princess Tag titles. Neither likes to lose to the other and now they will meet in a singles match where the winner advances in the Princess Cup and the loser is eliminated so each’s determination and drive to win will be raised immeasurably. These two are remarkably similar in their fight styles. Both Miu and Yuki are tank style wrestlers, using strong hits and slams to overwhelm and exhaust opponents. Expect to see at least one and possibly several wars over who can effectively use a running shoulderblock. They both have numerous big slams that can do major damage to opponents but where they differ is the positioning of an opponent. Much of Yuki’s striking offense and submissions rely on her opponent being prone on the mat. She favors hitting her opponents with sentons to do damage and take their wind. Miu on the other hand does much of her damage when her opponents are standing dazed. Her Canadian backbreaker submission is much easier to initiate if her opponent is standing rather than on the ground and her laser beam strike is something to be feared. It’s advantageous for Miu to stay on her feet as much as possible and not let Yuki employ her ground game. Yuki was able to beat Miu in their only singles confrontation so we will see if that is a mental advantage for Yuki or if it’s greater motivation for Miu to push through to victory.
  • Maki will take on Suzume to round out the quarterfinal matches. Maki has declared that she will win the tournament and will beat Mizuki along the way. But to do either of those things she needs to get through Suzume first. This will be Maki’s 2nd appearance in the later rounds of the tournament. Suzume was only able to pass the first round in her appearance last year. On paper, Maki has a lot of advantages in this match. She has more experience in the tournament and more experience as a wrestler in general. As a wrestler, Maki is a bully. She likes needling, hitting and punishing opponents in various ways. Her many crab variations heavily damage the lower back and legs of her opponents. However, Maki is not what one would call, athletic or agile. Suzume’s advantage lies there. She’s a speedy and agile wrestler that can practically run circles around Maki. Suzume is adept at high speed attacks and roll-ups that could potentially befuddle Maki long enough to get the win. Also her Ring a bell cutter is powerful enough to down most anyone for a 3 count.
  • A six woman tag pitting the super idol team of Hikari, Raku and Yuki Arai will be taking on Nao, Marika and Arisu. It’s blue, yellow and blue vs purple orange, purple. This is a fairly even matchup in terms of style and experience so this should be a fun match with some exciting pairings.
  • Hyper Misao, Neko and Nodoka will pair off in a three-way match on this show. Misao is one of the most crafty in the game but Neko recently picked up a win in a three-way and has becoming more and more sly in her matches. Nodoka is a great and powerful wrestler but has been known to be somewhat gullible. Three-ways are always unpredictable so the winner is anyone’s guess.
  • Another 6 woman match on this show is Team Toyo and Moka facing Mirai, Pom and Kaya. It’s been a while since Kamiyu and Mahiro have teamed together. Last they were together they were on opposing teams and Mahiro was frustrated with her loss. Hopefully there are no residual feelings from that match and the two can work together fluidly and be a positive force to assist Moka. They’re going to need to be working on all cylinders since they’re up against Mirai, Pom and Kaya. Mirai is a scary powerhouse with a destructive lariat, pom is a plotting mastermind and though still a rookie, Kaya is an impressive and agile wrestler who isn’t to be taken lightly. They’re combined efforts could in theory easily dispatch a tag team exhibiting disfunction.
  • After the winners of the quarterfinals have been decided, the competitors will redraw lots and the semifinal matches could potentially be shuffled.
  • Yuka Sakazaki is on her way back to Japan. She’s scheduled to appear at the 8/14 Kourakuen show.
  • Wrestle Universe has rolled out a new high definition player for live shows. The good news is that the player can show much higher quality than previous and has a multi-channel feature that allows for changing between different audio tracks if available. This means that you can change between English commentary and Japanese commentary when they are available. The bad news is that the new player does not currently seem compatible with the PS4 browser or numerous casting programs. There does seem to be a special method for using Chromecast and steps for which can be found on the DDT website. Hopefully this will be fixed for all platforms in the near future.
  • Tokyo Joshi currently has 1 more known trainee that will likely make her debut sometime in the near future.
  • DDT and Tokyo Joshi have opened an international store. https://ddtstore.bigcartel.com/ They have previously had several Tokyo Joshi shirts for order. More products will likely be made available soon so be sure to check the site regularly.

Here are my Predictions I'll say

Miu Watanabe
Rika
Mizuki
Maki

Those four will be moving on in the Princess Cup. The big upset Mizuki but Miyu is the Champion she doesn't need to win this at all.

Maki Itoh out with injury

She suffered a fractured cheekbone in her match with Suzume. The Tokyo Sports article said this injury usually takes 2-4 weeks to heal. She will miss the 8/7 show in Nagoya.

------

That sucks!
