Well a lot of things people dunked on TNA for back in the day is shit that is popular now. It's a more meta age of wrestling now where not even the indies are workrate-focused anymore. In fact, indies that would've been considered "niche" back in the day because of the absurdity of their product, are now the biggest indies in the US.
yeah ppl like king of the mountain and the other silly stuff now but back then the purists were like NO -

Seriously. If WCW realized being number two was ok as long as their business was still as good as it was when they were number 1 (1998 outdid 1997 by a large margin and 1999 was trending higher than even 1998 by March of 1999), and they didn’t panic to try to get back to number 1, tneu have stayed a healthy and profitable number 2. Still drawing 4 tv ratings, 200-400K monthly PPV buys and selling out 10-20K seat venues for years and years.

Again, in February they pulled two 5s for Nitro while Raw did a 6. When Nitro was winning they’d do a 4.5 to Raw’s 4. Why care that you’re “losing” when the losing number you’re doing now is higher than when you were winning. Who cares if raw does a 6 when you’re doing a 5 in February!

Because only higher places and larger numbers proof that you have the better product, duh.

well that is what happens when the guy who starts the company lays a goal to put VKM out of business. it's why sometimes I think the crticism of TK and ppl acting like no boss should ever act like this....look up your wrestling history. its mired in this petty shit lol

It’s just wild to me that as the number 2 promotion they were drawing more fans on TV getting more attendance records than ever before they broke two of their attendance records in early 1999 and still drawing large buys on pay-per-view as the number 2 promotion and if they were perfectly happy, being more profitable, when losing than they were when they were winning, they could’ve continued to draw fours and fives on TV still sold out the Georgia dome and still made fucking hundreds of millions of dollars a year in pay-per-view buys. And that could’ve continued until like 2007 or so but instead they’re like oh we have to be number one so let’s panic and kill our product.

I mean it’s not fair necessarily to look in hindsight, but the WWF cooled off tremendously by 2002. All WCW had to do was continue to do what they were doing in February 1999 and they would’ve bounce back to being competitive with the WWE by 2002 one year after they close.

WCW died because of the huge contracts. Have you seen Hogan's contract in 1998? For a guy whose star was very much fading and was a lifetime of trouble backstage

But how much of that uncompetitiveness is connected to lack of a rival?

Well that and AOL merger they decided wrestkijg was no good. But ya contracts def were a huge factor no doubt . Many things contributed to their deaths. Hogan being a major one

All the huge contracts were a massive problem, but they weren’t a problem until they stopped selling houses and pay-per-view buys. Hogan like you said had one of the largest contracts ever in 1998, but WCW in 1998 still become the highest grossing and most profitable wrestling promotion in history at that point in 1998 even with those huge contracts.
