January 29, 1996:
Just 8 days removed from his second consecutive Royal Rumble victory, Shawn Michaels makes his way down to the ring to face Yokozuna in one on one action and lets everyone know he's still in the Kliq:
Shawn plays the game of pointing at his opponent so the crowd boos, and then pointing at himself so the crowd cheers:
Crowd boos!
Crowd cheers
They lock up and Yoko throws Shawn to the mat, exhibiting his clear power advantage as the crowd boos. Hard shoulder-block as Shawn hits the mat hard. Shawn uses his speed advantage and knocks Yoko out of the ring with a series of hard right hands as the crowd explodes in approval:
Now, sensing Yoko might be in some trouble Owen Hart makes his way down to ringside:
And Shawn could careless as he runs around ringside giving high-fives to the fans, :
Back from commercial, Shawn is in the corner and Yoko runs and jumps at him only for Shawn to move out of the way of that freight train. Shawn goes to the top rope and hits a double axe-handle. Shawn goes back to the top, and hits a picture perfect moonsault on Yokozuna:
2 count on the moonsault. Yoko irish-whips Shawn into the corner and out of the ring. Owen is attacking Shawn on ht outside with kicks and rams his back into the ring post:
They are making it clear Shawn is the underdog babyface here with not only the size difference between he and Yokozuna, but also in the numbers game with Jim Cornette and Owen Hart attacking Shawn on the outside of the ring as Shawn lies on the outside of the ring after the most recent attack:
On commentary, Vince reminds us that no matter what, you can't count out Shawn Michaels, making it very clear he is the new top babyface in the company. Owen attacks Shawn again with another cheapshot to the back. Shawn can't catch a break in this match thus far, especially since Owen came down ringside. Shawn slowly makes his way back into the ring. Yoko snapmeres Shawn down and works Shawn's shoulder, but it's really just a way for Yoko to rest and get the crowd going again for Shawn. Shawn back up on his feet, and elbows Yoko a few times to the stomach and runs the ropes only to be met with a vicious clothesline that sends Shawn back down:
Back from commercial, Yoko misses a legdrop. Crowd firmly behind Shawn as Shawn goes to the top and misses with a splash. Both guys are down on the mat as we are at a clear crossroads in this match. Yoko makes his way on his feet first. Shawn blocks a Yoko punch, and hits him with a few more right hands. Shawn hits his patented running fore-arm on Yoko not once, but twice as the crowd goes nuts:
Shawn then hits Yoko with his patented jumping boot to the side of the head:
Shawn then goes to the top and Yoko catches Shawn in mid-air and runs him into the corner. Cornette jumps on the apron and has the ref distracted. Owen enters the ring as Yoko holds Shawn. Owen goes for the spinning heel kick, but Shawn moves out of the way and he hits Yoko with it instead!:
Crowd loves that. Shawn then hits Yokozuna with some Sweet Chin Music!:
Shawn wins and the crowd pops. Shawn celebrates after the win!
Dissention among the ranks in Camp Cornette continues as Owen, Bulldog, and Yoko aren't on the same page. They then realize Shawn is out there by himself. Fortunately, Diesel hits the ring at the perfect time to even out the odds alittle bit!:
After that, Cornette challenges Shawn and Diesel to a tag match on next week's Raw with Shawn and Diesel taking on the British Bulldog and Yokozuna. Shawn and Diesel accept as they do what would later on become to be known as the nWo "spooky fingers", which as you can see, the Kliq were doing on WWF TV long before the nWo ever existed:
Analysis: I really liked this match. A good, solid TV match that told a story and built Shawn stronger as he overcame the odds in terms of size difference between he and Yokozuna AND the numbers-game advantage on the outside of the ring with Owen Hart and Jim Cornette interfering at different times of the match. Shawn had to be built strong to take on Bret and win the title at WM in the next couple of months. He won the Rumble the previous year, but lost clean to Diesel for the title at the previous year's at WM. He was going to win it this year, but had to be built very strong going into WM 12 as this would be his first time winning the World Title, and winning it from the guy who had been the face of the company for the past 4 years. They did an effective job here, and Shawn is very over as the top face. Good stuff.
Hope you guys enjoyed this week's foray into Shawn's 1996! Next week at this time on next week's RAW, we will be taking a look at the HBK/Diesel (2 Dudes with Attitude!) vs. British Bulldog and Yokozuna in some tag action. See you next week!
