I never said anything about racism. I said that the Cardinals will ensure that they pick someone who will embody what they see as the example of Roman Catholic Christianity, and that is someone like Ratzinger. It's self preservation.

It's not to talk of race to acknowledge that our whole society in the Western world has been shaped by affluent, white, European men.

Honestly if the Catholic Church every appointed a black pope, I would be shocked beyond belief and very fearful of that man's safety. Pretty sure a black Pope would be assassinated as soon as the white smoke rose from the Vatican chimney.

I agree. If anyone thinks the Catholic Church are about to change given the rise of secularism then you're crazy. It's all about strengthening the message.

And if any Catholics think that they're going to get a more liberal pope ('liberal' with a small 'L') then I'm afraid they're going to have to look for a different belief system.

I actually think that there is a very good chance that the next Pope will be black. As Mick said last time around an African cardinal was in the running to win it and this time around they must be second or third favourite. I actually would put money, and may do if I can find the rights odds out there, on the next Pope being from outside of Europe.

People have to realise the motivations behind selecting the next Pope. They want to pick the person that will grow the church the most and will bring in the most amount of followers as that brings in more revenue. Africa is a market where they could expand a lot and it would be a smart strategic choice. The Catholic church is just like any other billion dollar business, it is all about expansion and growing the company/church.

It only two them a couple of days to elect a new pope, didn't take them anywhere near as long as I expected. Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the new pope and will be known as Pope Francis. He has a tough task ahead trying to clean up the church after all the recent scandals and cover ups.

I like the fact he seems like an intelligent and humble person. He's automatically more likable imo than the previous pope.
