The European Union will pause the adoption of its retaliatory tariffs on a swathe of U.S. goods for 90 days, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, a day after the White House issued a reprieve on most of its own levies.

On Wednesday, EU members voted in favor of the package, which was designed in response to the U.S. 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum launched last month. The duties were due to be finalized in the coming days, with an initial tranche set to come into effect on April 15. The full list of targeted items has not yet been published, though a draft document seen by CNBC in March listed products spanning clothing, poultry, grains, machinery and more.

“We took note of the announcement by President Trump. We want to give negotiations a chance,” von der Leyen said on Thursday.

The Trump administration did not comply with a federal judge’s order setting a Friday morning deadline for officials to lay out steps for the return of a Maryland man mistakenly deported to a mega-prison in El Salvador, calling it “impracticable” to adhere to a time limit set hours after the Supreme Court affirmed much of the judge’s previous order for the man’s return.

Justice Department lawyers instead asked to be allowed to have until Tuesday to provide the information, eliciting a rebuke from the judge, who gave them until 11:30 a.m. Friday, two more hours past her original deadline. In a response, the Justice Department said it is unable to provide the information in such a short time.

“In light of the insufficient amount of time afforded to review the Supreme Court’s Order following the dissolution of the administrative stay in this case, Defendants are not in a position where they 'can’ share any information requested by the Court,” a Justice Department attorney wrote in the reply. “That is the reality.”

The exchange marked another escalation in a tug-of-war between the executive and judicial branches that has prompted concern among legal experts that it could lead to a constitutional crisis.

US President Donald Trump's administration has exempted smartphones and computers from reciprocal tariffs, including the 125% levies imposed on Chinese imports.

US Customs and Border Patrol published a notice late on Friday explaining the goods would be excluded from Trump's 10% global tariff on most countries and the much larger Chinese import tax.

The move comes after concerns from US tech companies that the price of gadgets could skyrocket, as many of them are made in China.

Police say a person is in custody after a suspected arson fire at Pennsylvania governor's mansion

Police say they evacuated Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family from the governor’s official residence after someone set fire to the building.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Police said Sunday a man was arrested and will face charges including attempted murder, terrorism and attempted arson in an early morning fire that badly damaged the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion and forced Gov. Josh Shapiro, his family and guests to quickly escape.

Sunday’s announcement came after Shapiro and his family were awakened by state troopers at about 2 a.m. and were evacuated from the official governor’s residence in the state capital of Harrisburg.

Shapiro told an afternoon news conference that he, his wife, their four children, two dogs and another family that had celebrated the Jewish holiday of Passover with his family at the residence on Saturday were awakened by state troopers.

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa won the country’s presidential election on Sunday based on preliminary results, an electoral official said, as his main rival demanded a recount of the vote following a race overshadowed by drug-fueled violence that has consumed the once-peaceful South American country.

Noboa, a conservative, has made fighting crime and economic revitalization two of his main goals — summed up in the slogan “New Ecuador”— as he faces, among other challenges, violence by criminal groups and an energy crisis that has caused constant blackouts in the country.

I don't think it was an accident. I think the el Salvador pres wanted him specifically. He had been granted legal asylum . So you basically just sold him back to where he ran away from. Unless I got my facts wrong . It's somehow even more evil.

He was granted specific protections from being deported back to El Salvador just a few years ago yeah. I believe under any circumstances where he would face deportation, other countries were supposed to be considered.
