Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced cryptocurrency mogul who was once a top Democratic donor, has embarked on a long-shot campaign to secure a pardon from the Trump administration, six people with knowledge of the matter said.

The effort has been driven by a small group of Mr. Bankman-Fried’s supporters, including his parents, Joe Bankman and Barbara Fried, who are trying to help their son escape the 25-year prison sentence he received after he was convicted of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering in the collapse of his crypto exchange, FTX.

A former U.S. solicitor general advised a federal judge Friday to accept a Justice Department request to drop corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams but to disallow an indictment from being later refiled so it doesn’t hang over him “like the proverbial Sword of Damocles.”

Paul Clement, who was solicitor general under President George W. Bush, delivered the recommendation to Judge Dale E. Ho in papers filed two weeks after Ho appointed him to advise on the case.

In a written submission, Clement told Ho that there was “ample reason” to dismiss the prosecution without granting the Justice Department’s request to be able refile them after this year’s mayoral election, which would leave “a prospect that hangs like the proverbial Sword of Damocles over the accused.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the nation’s premier agency for weather and climate science, has been told by the Trump administration to prepare to lose another 1,000 workers, raising concerns that NOAA’s lifesaving forecasts might be hindered as hurricane and disaster season approaches.

The new dismissals would come in addition to the roughly 1,300 NOAA staff members who have already resigned or been laid off in recent weeks. The moves have alarmed scientists, meteorologists and others at the agency, which includes the National Weather Service. Some activities, including the launching of weather balloons, have already been suspended because of staffing shortages.

Together, the reductions would represent nearly 20 percent of NOAA’s approximately 13,000-member work force.

US stocks fell solidly Monday as investors processed growing concerns about the health of the US economy and readied for a busy week of economic data, headlined by a report on inflation amid concerns over its resurgence under President Trump's unpredictable trade policy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell 0.8%, while the benchmark S&P 500 (^GSPC) dropped 1.3% after the index posted its worst week since September. The Nasdaq (^IXIC) also plummeted nearly 2%, with "Mag 7" stocks leading the sell-off.

The Supreme Court on Monday said it would review a Colorado law that bars mental health professionals from practicing “conversion therapy” for minors, a discredited practice that attempts to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

Kaley Chiles, a licensed counselor and practicing Christian, challenged that law under the First Amendment, claiming that her patients voluntarily seek out her services.

Chiles, who was represented by the religious group Alliance Defending Freedom, argued that the laws enacted in Colorado and more than 19 other states “silence counselors’ ability to express views their clients seek.” But state officials countered that they may regulate the medical treatment of patients.
