Episode 33: Death vs. The Dragon (So...Sauron vs. Smaug?)
~ Okay...we start with Johnny Mundo vs. Alberto El Patron being anounnced for Ultima Lucha...
~ Next is a Vampiro ringside interview with Super Fly. The guy is being a cry baby and Vampiro
calls him out on it. Fuck you Super Fly!
~ We now get round 2 in the Sexy Star/Super Fly feud...
*Watches Match*
Okay...I love Sexy Star...but she seems a little...botchie in this match. I noticed a few spots that
looked very...awkward. Super Fly gets the win with a sit out powerbomb and of course Super Fly
attacks Sexy after the match and tries to take/rip her mask off. What an ass!
~ We now see Pentagon Jr. enter the ring...and it appears he doesn't give a shit about the Aztec
Medallions...he wants to fight...Vampiro. Oh My...this is very interesting. There is a tense confrontation
between the 2 before a ref comes to separate them.
~ Our second match of the night is a Four-way Aztec medallion match: Aerostar vs. Marty the Moth vs.
Cage vs. The Mack...
*Watches Match*
A few notes:
~ Cage and the Mack are both extremely agile for their size...
~ Marty the Moth is still a creeper...I saw him creeping near Melissa Santos during the match...
~ Aerostar has really grown on me as a performer...
And Aerostar gets the win by pinning Marty the Creeper after Cage and the Mack took each other out.
Nice...Aztec Medallion Count:
#1. Fenix
#2. Jack Evans
#3. Aerostar
~ We now get a gym segment where Team Havoc are working out only to be confronted by Sorceress
Catrina who sicks The Disciples of Death on them. Lights out, lights on and we see Team Havoc laid out
as Catrina and Mil Muertes walk off. Damn...this is reminding me of the Wyatt Family...or the Ministry of Darkness.
~ We now get our main event which is another Number 1 contender match with my boy Drago taking on
Mil Muertes 2.0...and Oh fuck off! Baby Nuts Hernandez is attacking Drago before the match...hand me my
phone so I can call bullshit!
~ Catrina & Mil 2.0 make their entrance and there are "Mamacita" chants for Catrina. I remember Eddie calling
Chyna that back in the day.
I'm really hoping Drago can get the win here...but...
*Watches Match*
He doesn't...Damn...it was a great match...but this new version of Mil is just so powerful...even more so than before.
Mil got the victory with the Flatliner.
~ After the match Prince Puma & Konnan appeared at the top of the temple stairs for a long distance stare down.
Highlights: Drago vs. Mil 2.0, Catrina being hot, Aerostar scoring a medallion, the Vampiro/Pentagon segment...
Lowlights: Sexy Star loosing and looking botchie while doing it, Marty the Creeper being creepy...
All in All...Catrina & Mil Muertes are clearly being pushed and the The Disciples of Death are also giving them a
numbers advantage. While I'm a huge fan of Prince Puma and I enjoy long title reigns...I can honesty see Mil taking
Puma out/down at Ultima Lucha. The Vampiro/Pentagon feud has my attention the most and I really hope Vampiro
gets in the ring one more time.
Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
Episode 34: Gold and Guerreros (Is a bad combination)
~ We open with an office segment with Dario & Chavo. It appears Chavo is getting a shot at Puma tonight in a No DQ
match...Okay.
~ Delavar Daivari vs. Texano is our first match and...
*Watches Match*
Texano gets the win! Big Ryck needs to keep his one eye open...lol
~ Konnan, Prince Puma, Catrina & Mil Muertes feature in a gym segment next and Konnan doesn't care about any
supernatural powers...
~ Konnan is seen talking with an unknown ally...interesting...time for Mexico to deliver...
~ Drago vs. Hernandez is up next...and...
*Watches Match*
its a solid match...but its eventually thrown out with DQ win going to Drago...Hernandez cuts a nice promo after the
match to get some heel heat.
~ We are now in a hallway with Chavo, Catrina & Mil Muertes...its your standard Catrina segment...and then Mil
bellows like a beast and I soil myself slightly.
~ Alberto El Patron vs. Marty "The Moth" Martinez is next...and its a squash match with Alberto scoring the win.
Alberto cuts a great promo afterwards...I finally see why Alberto is a big name in wrestling...the guy is an all round star.
~ Now the main event...Chavo Guerrero vs. Prince Puma for the LU Championship...and its No DQ...but if Konnan gets
involved...Chavo wins the title...WTF?! And Chavo has the Crew with him...oh dear...I can see where this is going...
*Watches Match*
Its a fucking mess...seriously...the Crew have a habit of fucking up possibly good matches...luckily Texano comes out to
help Puma and he retains his title.
Texano cuts a nice promo after the match and he seems to work as a face for the most part.
~ We end the episode with a locker room segment between Chavo & Blue Demon Jr. and I was glad to see Blue Demon...
but...it appears Chavo is playing him...is Blue Demon turning heel?
Highlights: Catrina & Mil Muertes, Alberto & Puma scoring wins, Drago looking sharp...
Lowlights: The Crew ruining another main event, Overall the matches were pretty poor, No Sexy Star...
All in All...possibly the worst episode of the show so far. I know not every episode can be great...but this felt way below average.
Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
Episode 35: Fuel to the Fire (Gasoline?)
~ We open with Pentagon Jr. speaking with his Master in a dojo segment. It appears Ian Hodgkinson
(Vampiro's real name) will be the next sacrifice. My guess of Dario being Pentagon's master appears
to be off. I is curious...
~ The Mack vs. Cage is the first match of the show and its a brutal but dynamic fight with the Mack scoring the win...
lol Mack flipped Cage the bird after the match.
~ Next up is a Catrina/Team Havoc locker room segment...man...Catrina is everywhere at the moment...not that I mind
because she's sexy and she's knows it. Its a great segment with some darkness & comedy. Ivelisse is great...
~ We now get a Vampiro ringside interview with...Oh Shit...Pentagon Jr. Vampiro apologizes...Pentagon doesn't care...
Vampiro asks who "the Master" is...Pentagon doesn't care...
Vampiro states that Pentagon is like he was back in the day, Pentagon calls Vampiro a coward, Vampiro fires up,
Pentagon challenges Vampiro to a match at Ultima Lucha, Vampiro isn't buying it, Pentagon walks off and the
interview ends with a Vampiro death stare. That was intense...
The next match is Mil Muertes vs. Son of Havoc...Oh shit...this doesn't look good for Havoc. Catrina, Ivelisse & Angelico
are all at ringside for this one...
*Watches Match*
Mil dominates for most of the match...but Havoc still got a few moves in. It gets really interesting when the Disciples appear
at ringside and Angelico & Ivelisse get a beatdown. Havoc makes the save...but Mil takes advantage and scores the victory.
Havoc gets a lick from Catrina as The "Death Cult" stand victorious.
~ Next up is a Texano, the Crew & Blue Demon Jr. in-ring promo...and its really strange. Texano is now playing the face...
The Crew attacks Texano...Blue Demon makes the save...only to then attack Texano with a chair...WTF?! And Blue Demon
will be fighting Texano at Ultima Lucha...Okay.
~ The Main event is an Atomicos Tag Match as Alberto El Patron...Oh Oh...Look! its Sexy Star!
*Sigh*
I love you Sexy!
Drago & Aerostar take on Johnny Mundo, Jack Evans, Super Fly & Hernandez...this should be interesting...
*Watches Match*
Okay...A few notes:
~ This match was a bit of a mess...
~ Aerostar continues to look better by the week...
~ Sexy looked sharp but she hardly had any ring time and she ended up getting pinned...damn...
Team Mundo gets the win...which is disappointing...but...Oh Shit...
~ Pentagon Jr. is attacking Vampiro...and he has a can of gasoline! Vampiro is now covered is gasoline and Pentagon has
a lighter...and...thankfully he doesn't immolate Vampiro...but its clear Pentagon wants Vampiro at Ultima Lucha.
Jesus...that was intense...
Highlights: Anything involving Pentagon Jr. & Vampiro, the entire show was a highlight really...
Lowlight: Not this week son...
All in All...Wow...what a show. I actually thought episode 34 was pretty poor...but this episode was off the hook...
one of the best yet. The Pentagon/Vampiro is stuff is so intense...and I really hope Vampiro rips him to pieces
at Ultima Lucha.
Episode 36: The Beginning Of The End (But thankfully only for Season 1)
We open with Pentagon Jr. having a sit down with Dario Cueto in his office. Pentagon doesn't want an Aztec medallion...
he and his master want Vampiro. No shit...you covered him with gasoline and held a lighter above him. It appears "the Master"
will reveal himself when Pentagon proves he is ready. I'm am so pumped for this match.
~ Time for an Aztec Medallion match as Bengala takes on Delavar Daivari...and the crowd is chanting "Golden Shower" lol
*Watches Match*
Bengala gets the win and the Medallion...and Daivari continues to not impress me...
~ Oh Boy...time for a Vampiro/Pentagon Jr. in-ring promo...Vampiro repeats much of what he said in the ringside
interview from last week...the crowd is chanting "One More Match!" Pentagon arrives and demands an answer to
his challenge...and thankfully after a few more words...Vampiro excepts and he then puts Pentagon down with a
huge chokeslam. Hell Yeah! And the crowd goes wild!
~ Oh Oh...Look! Its Sexy Star!
*Sigh*
Its a sombre locker room segment with Sexy showing some solid acting chops. Nice!
~ Next is another Aztec medallion match: King Cuerno vs. Killshot...Now your talking...
*Watches Match*
Wow...these 2 have great chemistry together and my Boy Cuerno gets the win and the medallion with a brutal looking
submission hold. Nice!
~ What follows is another Aztec medallion match with Super Fly taking on...Oh Oh...look! Its Sexy Star!
*Sigh*
Hey...I want some Sexy! Hey...I want some Sexy!
*Watches Match*
Wow...a submission squash match as Sexy unleashes her inner Becky Lynch as Super Fly taps out to an armbar in
record time. My Bae Sexy now has one of those special Aztec medallions...and she looks so happy...Yay!
Wait...wait a minute...Oh No...here comes Marty the Creeper...stay away from Sexy you Creeper! He's claiming Sexy's
medallion belongs to his Aztec tribe...and WTF?! We are now having an impromptu Aztec medallion match between Sexy
& Marty the Creeper...
*Watches Match*
And Sexy gets another submission win! Yay! 2 wins in a row for Sexy!
Aztec Medallion Count:
#1. Fenix
#2. Jack Evans
#3. Aerostar
#4. Bengala
#5. King Cuerno
#6. Sexy Star
~ We end the night with a face off between Prince Puma & Mil Muertes with Dario Cueto hosting. This is going to get messy...
*Watches Segment*
Puma & Mil are in the ring with Dario and suddenly the Sorceress Catrina appears at the top of the stairs (God she's hot!)
and the Disciples appear with the coffin from Mil's casket match...Dario is trying to regain control...but too late...its a 4 0n 1
attack on Puma by the Death Cult...Konnan hits the ring with his metal cane and takes out the Disciples...he's about to hit
Catrina but Mil grabs the cane and lays out Konnan and now Puma goes down again. Mil holds Puma as Catrina strikes
Konnan with the "Power Stone" Now the Disciples put Konnan in the coffin and the lid is shut...Mil hits the flatliner on Puma...
Mil stands tall with Konnan's cane and the title to end the show.
Highlights: The whole show...seriously...it was fantastic...
Lowlight: None!
All in All...another excellent episode as this series sprints to its end. I honestly can't believe how much I'm looking forward to
Vampiro vs. Pentagon Jr.
Lucha! Lucha! Lucha!
Episode 37: PenUltimaLucha (I...I have no comment to add)
~ We start with a Dario Cueto/Big Ryck office segment...with Dario making a few eye jokes...I think he was joking? Big Ryck
gets given an Aztec medallion and shakes Dario down for some cash...I honestly thought Dario had given up on Big Ryck...
but...I guess not...
Aztec Medallion Count:
#1. Fenix
#2. Jack Evans
#3. Aerostar
#4. Bengala
#5. King Cuerno
#6. Sexy Star
#7. Big Ryck
~ Our opening match is Johnny Mundo vs. Texano...
*Watches Match*
Its a solid match...but here comes the Crew to ruin things...a DQ win for Texano but its now a 3 on 1 attack until Alberto El Patron
arrives and chases off Mundo and the Crew. There is still tension between Alberto & Texano...but they don't come to blows.
~ Back in Dario's office Hernandez is having a sit down with Mr. Cueto...and it appears Hernandez will be fighting Drago at Ultima
Lucha in a "Believer's Backlash" Match...which is basically a lumberjack match with leather belt armed fans as the lumberjacks.
Jesus...that sounds bad...for Hernandez.
~ The Mack & Cage are having another match and Cage opens with a rampage of offensive moves...and...the Mack gets the win
with a surprise sunset flip. Cage & Mack continue to fight all over the temple for Dario comes out to cut a promo. It appears Cage
& the Mack will be having a falls count anywhere match at Ultima Lucha...Nice! Vince should take a lesson from Dario about giving
the fans what they want.
~ Now we have the Gift of the Gods in-ring segment...and hot damn that belt is is awesome. Okay...it turns out the new title belt is
like a combination of the Money in the Bank contract and the Intercontinental title...and I love it.
We are getting a 7 way match at Ultima Lucha for the Gift of the Gods title...as they introduce the medallion holders (bar Fenix)
and the performers each place their medallions into the plates on the belt. Its very cool...
It appears Fenix is a no show and his medallion will be contested in a Battle Royale...but it turns out Fenix is here...okay...but he'll
have to win it back.
~ Its an Aztec medallion Battle Royale featuring Fenix, Famous B, Ricky Mandel, Killshot, Argenis, Vinny Massaro, Daivari, Super Fly,
Mascarita Sagrada, and Marty "The Moth" Martinez.
*Watches Match*
And Fenix wins the medallion for the second time and places it in the Gift of the Gods belt...a very nice moment.
~ The final build for Ultima Lucha takes place in the ring as Prince Puma prepares to cut a promo...of course Mil 2.0 (in a suit) and
Catrina (HOT!!!) appears. The Disciples of Death hit the ring but Puma takes them down...Mil rushes the ring but Puma takes him
down as well...the show ends with Puma standing tall...Damn Puma was on fire during that in-ring fight.
Highlights: The Gift of the Gods title, Fenix finally back in action, Puma standing tall, the hype for Ultima Lucha...
Lowlight: The matches were a little scrappy...
All in All...the end is near...and I'm both excited and sad about it. I'm sure the 2 episode Ultima Lucha event will cap this season off with a bang.
Episode 38: Ultima Lucha Pt.1
And so it comes to an end...the first season of Lucha Underground has been a thrilling ride with great characters, fantastic wrestling and intense
storytelling and I'm extremely grateful to the members of this forum who convinced me to give the show my time. Its been very rewarding. So...let's
begin with the "Pre-Show" episode...
~ We open with Dario Cueto & Black Lotus...and Dario states his brother Matanza didn't kill her parents...El Dragon Azteca did...interesting.
Match 1: The Mack vs. Cage in a Falls Count Anywhere with Weapons Match:
Notes: The Mack has scored two wins over Cage recently and this match serves as a crazy climax to their short but intense feud.
~ The temple is going fucking nuts during this one...like almost insane...
~ Cage uses a Fire extinguisher...
~ Mack breaks a 2x4 over Cage...
~ Mack smacks Cage in the head with a cooler, beers fly out, Mack pops two beers,
smashed them together and then hit Cage with a Stunner!
~ They move to the upper level where Cage turns the tide with a discus clothesline...
~ And then Cage curb stomps Mack through a (plaster) cinder block for the win!
Damn...that was a lot of fun and while I would have rather the Mack won...Cage was due for a win. A great opening to Ultima Lucha...
~ Match 2: Team Havoc vs. Disciples of Death in a tornado tag match for the Trios championship:
Notes: This match seems kind of forced...and Ivelisse is still injured...I am concerned. I have really come to like team Havoc and I'm
hoping they retain.
~ The Disciples have some sexy new masks...
~ And speaking of Sexy...Catrina is at ringside for this one...
~ Because of the tornado rules...the match is a giant mess...
~ Angelico hits another amazing flying crossbody of the top of Dario's office...
~ Ivelisse and Catrina get into a scuffle...
~ Catrina hits Ivelisse with the "Death Rock" and the Disciples get the win and the Trios Championship...Damn! Although Catrina did
lick Ivelisse after the match...that was hot!
~ There is a great moment where Striker toasts Vampiro with a beer as he won't be calling next episode...he'll be fighting Pentagon Jr.
Match 3: Drago vs. Hernandez in a "Believer's Backlash" Match:
Notes: I have to be honest...I would have rather seen Drago in the LU Championship match (As a Triple Threat Match of course) so I
was never really keen on this match.
~ This match is one giant mess and I honestly think it was over-booked with so many belt carrying fans crowding the ring.
~ The fans helping Drago was cool...
~ Hernandez sure did take some belt shots...the man was covered in whip marks...even on his face...
~ Drago got the win...which I wanted...but I feel he deserved more than this for the season finale.
We end the episode with El Dragon Azteca attempting to enter the temple...but he is stopped by a character I'm calling White Hood.
It appears El Dragon is attempting to rescue Black Lotus...but White Hood declares the prophecy states he will die...El Dragon enters
anyway as the doors close behind him.
Highlights: The Mack vs. Cage, Catrina licking Ivelisse, Drago scoring the win,
the Striker/Vampiro toast segment...
Lowlights: Team Havoc losing the Trios Championship, the "Believer's Backlash" Mess...
All in All...solid...but the match order really seemed out tonight. The Mack & Cage should have main evented and the Drago/Hernandez
match should have opened the night.
Episode 39: Ultima Lucha Pt.2 (The Final One!)
~ The show is dedicated to the memory of the original rudo "Rowdy" Roddy Piper...
~ It appears Michael Schiavello is taking Vampiro's place tonight...this should be interesting...
Match 1: Alberto El Patron vs. Johnny Mundo:
Notes: This better be good...because their last match was awesome!
~ Too much time was spent pissing around outside the ring...
~ Once in the ring the action was good...but...nowhere near as good as their first encounter...
~ Alberto finally locked in the armbar but Melina appeared and hit him with the AAA Championship belt and it allowed Mundo to score
the win...WTF?!
~ So...we couldn't get Melina any earlier than episode 39?
~ Alberto puts Mundo through a window...and then Alberto "spanked" Melina...Okay...and Mundo appears to be bleeding quite badly...
but the camera doesn't linger on him long enough...
~ Next is a dungeon segment with El Dragon Azteca attempting his rescue of Black Lotus...but of course Dario shows up. They
tease the reveal/release of Matanza but Black Lotus grabs El Dragon and kills him with a spine punch...WTF?
Dario then decides to do the bolt and takes Black Lotus and Matanza with him...but they still don't reveal Matanza...what a tease.
Dario has to build a new temple...
Match 2: Vampiro vs. Pentagon Jr. in a "Cero Miedo match" No disqualifications, no count outs, and anything goes:
Notes: This match interested me the most with hopefully the eventual reveal of the master...
~ Okay...so Vampiro is dressed as a satanic pope...that is cool...and it reminds me of that band Ghost...check them out.
And...and...I honestly have no idea where to begin with this. It is the most visceral wrestling "match" I have seen since Hell in A Cell at King of the Ring 1998. I just can't really sum it up in words...this match effected me in a way that wrestling has never effected me before...Its actually hard to explain.
The chair shots, the thumbtacks, the light bulb tubes, the mask ripping, the blood, the blood licking, the burning table, Vampiro on fire...it was completely insane and like a slow motion car accident I couldn't turn away from.
Pentagon scored the win...(although really both these guys lost) and he gets on the mic and calls to his master. Vampiro isn't done yet and demands Pentagon break his arm...WTF?! So...time for the shoulder snapper and...crack! Damn...
Pentagon once again calls for his master and now Vampiro has a mic...
"Pentagon! You're looking for your teacher...Well, let me tell you something. As your teacher I tell you, you are ready, my son."
Oh God...Vampiro is the master...and Pentagon bows at his feet before the two embrace in the middle of the ring.
And it doesn't matter what comes after...because nothing will top that match and that reveal.
Thank you Vampiro...
Thank you Pentagon Jr...
I Thank you for the blood and pain...and making wrestling feel so real.
I'm sorry...but I have to stop writing this now...
*Comes back 3 days later*
Okay...so I've recovered from that match...moving on...Next up is...
Match 3: A Seven-way Match Aerostar vs. Bengala vs. Big Ryck vs. Fenix vs. Jack Evans vs. King Cuerno vs. Sexy Star
for the Gift of the Gods Championship:
Notes: Honestly...its going to take a lot for this match to outshine what Vampiro and Pentagon did...
~ I'll be happy with Fenix, King Cuerno or Sexy Star winning...
~ Big Ryck is actually wearing wrestling trunks this week...weird...
~ Aerostar hits the spot of the match with a third story flop onto some bodies below...fucking amazing!
~ Jesus...Marty the Creeper is back...and he's attacking my Bae Sexy Star...Thankfully Sexy kicks his ass again...serves
you right you creeper!
~ The match is filled with some great spots...but it is a bit of a mess.
~ Jack Evans has Fenix locked in a tarantula hold...but Fenix and delivered some brutal knee shots before hitting the
Firedriver for the win and the brand new title! Nice! Although clearly King Cuerno is not happy...
Match 4: Texano vs. Blue Demon Jr. in a No DQ Match:
Notes: Why do I get the feeling the Crew are going to ruin this match?
~ And its basically a 4 on 1 attack with Blue Demon Jr. eventually getting the "win" with Chavo and the Crew helping him.
Well...that was a waste of time...
Match 5: Prince Puma vs. Mil Muertes for the Lucha Underground Championship:
Notes: This is it...the final match...the title on the line...light vs. darkness...Puma vs. Mil...and here we go!
~ Catrina is at ringside...Hot!
~ No Konnan...I have no idea where he's at...
~ The match spills into the stands...
~ Puma hit Mil with a random shoe...lol
~ Puma used Catrina as a "weapon" against Mil...Hot!
~ The action finally moves into the ring...
~ Its a great match with many near falls with both performers showing their skill, power and speed...
~ And it finally ends when Mil hits a Flatliner off the top rope...1,2,3...
Mil Muertes is the new champion...and Catrina gives Puma a lick as the Disciples
enter the ring and the "Death Cult" stand tall with their gold...and its a very imposing image to finish with.
Of course now we get a final backstage video segment of the season:
~ Dario Cueto & Black Lotus make a quick getaway with the cash and the red bull statue. They leave in a black SUV which
is lugging a horse trailer...and...Oh God...I can see Matanza...he wears a mask like Kane!
~ Finex and his new title slides into a gorgeous gold Pontiac Firebird...Fenix pulls out to joy ride down the street...only we get
to see King Cuerno in his truck ready to stalk his newest prey...
~ We now see Marty the Creeper...and who is he talking to? Oh No...Oh God No! Its Sexy Star! He has Sexy Star tied up hostage!
Someone do something!
~ Angelico, Son of Havoc & Ivelisse hit the open road together stating that they will get the Trios Championship back...I hope so...
~ Aerostar & Drago share a forearm handshake before they each ascend to the heavens...Wow...that was cool!
~ We now see Master & Student, Vampiro & Pentagon...and they are going to a dark place...God Damn...that gave me chills...
~ White Hood dons the mask of El Dragon Azteca before spray painting a giant question mark on the temple sign...
~ And with fade out with Dario Cueto "moving without moving" gliding away from the ring...
To Be Continued...
Highlights: Vampiro vs. Pentagon Jr, the final backstage segment, Fenix winning the Gift of the Gods title, the Death Cult rising to power...
Lowlight: I could list a few...but fuck it...I'll give them a pass...
Final Thoughts: Well...I've finished watching the first season of Lucha Underground...and well...it was fantastic. The wrestling is great, the characters are interesting and the overall presentation is the best I've seen on a wrestling show.
Every match (for the most part) seems to matter and each performer is given a chance to shine...for better or worse. Ultima Lucha itself was a bit of mess at some points...but overall it was a great way for the season to finish.
There are so many performers on the roster I enjoyed watching and I never had the urge to skip or skim through matches because of this.
I know through this recap I've made a point of obsessing over Sexy Star...but...Drago, King Cuerno, Pentagon Jr, Fenix, Mil Muertes, Angelico, Prince Puma...all of them are 1st class performers who should praised for their efforts.
Well...I was going to write up a full end of season recap...but...I am pretty worn out at this point...so I'll just end with this.
This show is awesome...And I will be hunting down Season 2 as soon as possible...
Thanks for taking the time to read this...and I'll see you round the lucha...
