The 2017 WWE Royal Rumble pay per view event was confirmed for the 29th of January and it would take place in San Antonio Texas at the Alamodome.

The first match announced for the Royal Rumble pay per view event, was rather fittingly the titular thirty man over the top rope battle royal, known as the Royal Rumble. As always the last man in the ring at the conclusion of the match. Would earn the right to chose to challenge for either the WWE Universal or WWE World Championship at WrestleMania 33.

Having had enough of Y2KO's antics on his show the General Manager of Monday Night RAW, Mick Foley. Took to the ring on the first episode of Monday Night RAW of 2017, to announce that come the Royal Rumble ppv. Kevin Owens(c) would put the WWE Universal Championship on the line against a man he knew all too well.
In the form of Sami Zayn, but Foley wasn't done with dropping some truth bombs on Owens. As he followed it up by announcing that Chris Jericho had a choice to make he could either accompany Owens at the ppv, or compete in the Royal Rumble match. And if he decided to attempt both then Jericho would find himself out of a job.

WWE World Championship - Ambrose's SD Future on the line
AJ Styles(c) VS Dean Ambrose
The current reigning and defending WWE World Champion, the "Phenomenal" AJ Styles(c) had be on a continuous high since winning the title belt. He captured the gold for the first time in his short career with the company. He did this by defeating then champion, Dean Ambrose(c) in a one on one match in the main event of the WWE Backlash ppv event. He followed this up by defeating both Ambrose and John Cena in a triple threat match at the Smackdown exclusive event No Mercy.
He concluded by 2016 by defeating John Cena in a TLC match at the Armageddon ppv. Going into 2017, Styles was once again confronted by Ambrose who challenged him to a match for the gold at the Rumble. With the former aka Styles jumping the gun by refusing, then Ambrose said he would leave SD if he lost and Styles accepted.

The "Legit Boss" Sasha Banks(c) aka the reigning WWE RAW Women's Champion was a very popular woman at the moment. As she had multiple other women that wanted a shot to take the gold away from her. The two most vocal were the pair of Bayley and Charlotte Flair, both had a claim to a title opportunity. Seeing as both women had beaten Banks in non-title encounters recently on episodes of Monday Night RAW. So RAW General Manager Mick Foley, took to the ring on the go home edition of Monday Night RAW, to announce a triple threat title match for the Royal Rumble.

This wasn't just any normal fatal four way though, as it was a number one contender's women's division match. The prize the winner would get is the right to challenge for the WWE Smackdown Women's Championship at the Royal Rumble. The quartet of Becky Lynch, Carmella, Eva Marie and Naomi went to war and left nothing to chance in the match. But only one woman could be crowned the N1C to the title, and it would be Lynch who submitted Marie with the Dis-Arm-Her.

It was announced on the company's website aka WWE.com that the Kickoff Show for the 2017 WWE Royal Rumble ppv. Would consist of two tag team matches, one for the WWE RAW Tag Team Championship. And the other for their blue brand counterpart aka the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championship. RAW GM Mick Foley announced that the Bar(c) would defend the gold against the team of Big Cass & Enzo Amore. While SD GM Daniel Bryan, revealed that American Alpha(c) would face the brother duo of Jey and Jimmy Uso aka the Uso's at the event.
