American Pie - 8/10

DAT NOSTALGIA. Most fun I've had with a movie in a long, long time. Makes me want to go back and relive the first few American Pie films, some of the greatest comedies for nostalgic reasons. I'm glad they went all out for this and got everybody back.

Citizen Kane

Can't believe it has taken me this long to watch this film which is widely regarded as one of, if not the, greatest films of all time. It is written, directed by and stars Orson Welles who was well known for his War of the Worlds radio broadcast. The film has Welles play Charles Foster Kane who is a wealthy media magnate who passes away and the film looks back over his life as a reporter tries to understand who he was and find out what Rosebud means, Rosebud was the last word Kane uttered before he died. It is a fantastic film that even though it goes for two hours the time flies by. It is incredibly well paced and well structed and Welles is brilliant in his role. In the end it breaks down to that well used tale of money not being able to buy happiness. I can't fault the movie, my only disappointment is that it took me this long to watch it.

Intolerable Cruelty (2003) 4/10
The title is the perfect way to sum up the experience of sitting through this exteremly unfunny film. George Clooney who I normally like gives a very rubber faced, gurning performance, Catherine Zeta-Jones is as bland as ever and the Cedric Entertainer character is the worse kind of racial steriotype. But the film doesn't work simply because the jokes are not funny enough, in fact some are crudely awful.

Looper - 8/10

This was recommended to me by a friend, and I knew nothing about this movie going in. First thing that threw me off was Joseph Gordon Levitt's face. It literally took me 10 minutes to figure out whether it was him or not until I ended up Googling it to find out they changed the look of his face to match Bruce Willis. Interesting. Whilst the movie is kinda hard to follow early on, I love how the story completely evolves into something totally different about mid-way through; those who have seen this will know the story so I won't bother talking about it. Very impressive film overall. A few questions and loose-ends, but Looper isn't a film to nitpick, not is it a film to dwell on. Accept the movie for what it is; original, action packed, intriguing and awesome.

Hitchcock

Saw this at the cinema today. This film is about Alfred Hitchcock and focusses on he and his wife during the making of Psycho. It stars Anthony Hopkins as Hitchcock and Helen Mirren as his wife Alma. Fantastic casting and a really enjoyable movie. The performances of those two really carry the movie and it is a smartly written movie. It looks at the relationship between Hitchcock and his wife as they battle to make the film that no-one thinks will work. It also looks into the subconcious of Hitchcock as he battles with the subject matter which was based on the real life serial killer Ed Gein. I am a huge Psycho fan so this appealed to me right away but the way that it was executed and the way that they chose to tell the story completely won me over. A lot of fun to watch and I highly recommend it.

The Sessions (2012) 8/10
Charming little indie film, about a guy with polio who decides he would like to lose his viginaity so hails a sex theapest to help him. It takes what could have been an very crude and akward subject and made it into something very funny, moving and brutally honest. The performances from John Hawkes, Helen Hunt and William H. Macy are first rate as well too. Love the scenes with the Hawkes character in chunch giving the priest all the gorey details and Macy's reactions are priceless!

Prometheus

Being a fan of the Alien movies, I was worried as all hell when I heard the reviews of it.

In the end I enjoyed this movie. A nice telling of how the Xenomorphs were created, some of the missing links between the "snakelike" facehuggers, and the first born Queen were really well done, and I absolutely loved the H.R. Giger-esque look of the Engineers Spacecraft. Michael Fassbender absolutely amazed me.

Charlize Theron's character was as flat & 2-dimensional as any woman written in a Garth Ennis comic(who typically dipects women as sex-crazed morons, often being picked up by someone offering them a walk-on role on The Simpsons), and it made everything feel like all the good writting was used on Fassbender & Rapace's characters, who I feel are the only characters this movie even needed. I am still lost on how Rapace's husband turned into a fucking zombie.

THX 1138 ~ B+

I watched the original version a while ago, and the one I watched today is a "Director's Cut" version, retouched by Lucas, which I was not a big fan of, I mean if it's not broken, why fix it? That's not to say that the movie is completely ruined, it's still a masterpiece for it's time.

One cannot be help but be reminded of "Brave New World" and "1984" when watching this movie, this is Lucas' attempt at portraying a nightmarish dystopia where everything is controlled by a totalitarian government, including religion and human emotion itself, and the citizens of the state are mandated to be intoxicated at all times to perform the taxing labor needed.....which in turn strips them of their very humanity, while "Unichapels" reassuringly hum on in the background telling them that everything will be okay....but the reassurance itself seems more frightening than empathetic, and this is true of every single element in the movie that serves as a device to aid the miserable existence of the "slaves" in the hypothetical society presented by Mr. Lucas.

While THX manages to find true love with LUH, this doesn't last long, as the state will not tolerate treason, and their escapades meet with an unfortunate end. The contrast here is obviously between the human love of LUH and THX as opposed to the "mechanical" assurance of the state, who delivers everything to the citizens in a "solo" fashion, from drugs, to sexual intercourse, which is provided as pornography in each citizens individual residence.

Visually enchanting, the movie leaves a lot to the imagination in my opinion. Definitely one worth multiple viewings. I remember enjoying the un-edited version more for some reason. So I'll give that an A and this a B+. I don't know if it's just me but I could see that certain bits were "added"...this may be due to the fact that I have already seen the movie before...wonder what people who have not seen the un-edited version would think.

Lincoln (2012) 7.5/10
Came to the conclusion that this was a good or very good film rather than the great film many have described it as. The period and politics does interest me, but unless you have a full grasp of it then maybe you will struggle in places as I did. The acting is wonderful with both Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones giving heavy wrieght performances with real depth, visually it maybe one of Spielberg's best films, the score did over egg certain scenes and Sally Field's performance was malodramatic, but mostly good.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2

Joker is believed to be rehabilitaed, and is brought onto a talk show to show Batman's Victims to the world. But with Batman back on the scene, Joker has found his reason to live again. Meanwhile President Reagan is using Superman as America's Greatest Weapon. Clark goes to try and tlk Bruce into retirement again, reminding him that Wonder Woman returned to Themascera, Green Lantern Hal Jordan left the planet, and that Green Arrow would still be alive if he had only retired. Commissioner James Gordon does a great retirement speach, talking about how most of Gothams criminals wouldnt have been captured without Batmans help, while new Commissioner Ellen Yindel(later retconned to just Ellen Yin) declares Batman a fugitive.

The action in this was just over the top crazy, Batman actually kills, goes toe to toe with Superman leaving him beaten & broken, and even sets up the Batman Dark Knight Strikes Back sequal to the comic.

9/10 the best DC animated film I have seen period.

The Big Lebowski

I guess I didn't like it as much as others. Thought it was pretty unfunny, and there were so many wierd parts that I generally hate in movies (seeing someone hallucinate stupid shit, is something I never enjoy in movies). But there were some good moments, The Dude is great and Walter is badass. Laughed out loud maybe 2-3 times throughout.

Seriously?

I mean, you're entitled to your opinion, but I thought that was a universally liked movie. Guess I assumed wrong.

I don't know either, This might be the first somewhat negative review i've heard..... So many iconic scenes and quotes from that flick, I still watch it every time it's on... To each his own, i guess

Only reason someone wouldn't like the Big Lebowski is if they were a full blown blueberry.
