Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I was released on the Wii and other platforms back in 2010. Sega confirmed this weekend that the upcoming follow-up, Episode II, will be bypassing Nintendo's console.

"The reason Episode I was on the Wii was because we wanted to bring the Sonic 4 saga to the widest possible audience," brand manager Ken Balough told Destructoid. "Episode II unfortunately will not be coming to the Wii -- for reasons most people have probably guessed, but that doesn’t mean the SEGA isn’t supporting Nintendo platforms, we have a very strong partnership and will continue to do so."

Episode II will bring back Sonic's sidekick Tails. It will also sport a new graphics and physics engine. Sega is attempting to incorporate all of the gamer feedback on Episode I into the sequel.

Sega plans to release Episode II in 2012. It's being developed for the Xbox 360, PS3, Android, iOS, and Windows 7 mobile phones.

A big blow to Nintendo fans. It shocks me that they won't release a game on all platforms. There is a chance for a lot more money if they release across the board.

Sonic not on Nintendo? I assumed that would be the ideal market for the game.

Why in the world are they doing this? I don't own a Wii, but that's not right.

It's Nintendo's fault. The article says they are using a new graphics and physics system so I have to assume the Wii isn't capable of utilizing it.

If that's the case, then it's quite a bold move. Since sales on the Wii I'm sure have been more than respectable for Sonic 4 Episode 1, I find it quite hard to understand why they would use a brand new game engine so powerful the wouldn't be able to handle it.

Not only that, but gamers expected a 8 to 10-month gap between episodes, like Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, not over a year. Plus, Sonic Generations, recently released, has been considered by a lot of fans and critics what Sonic 4 should have been. Therefore, the momentum for Sonic 4 has decreased drastically.

Sales for Episode 2 will be low, very low.
