Thats not the only mental condition which has such a significant effect lol. Seems like you're one of those self-righteous lads who aren't actually that smart but pretend they do.
Dementia > depression~

Because people who do it generally aren't in the best frame of mind and often aren't thinking straight. Depression is so complex.
Sometimes people do it because they hate themselves and think they deserve it. Some people do it because it's the only thing that will make them feel any relief. There really are a load of reasons.

Some people hide cutting very well- not everybody is so quick to go showing off their cuts as some people would have you believe.

It's something that's always confused me is all, I can't stand stubbing my toe, let alone breaking my own skin with a sharp object :/.

It's not about making your life better... it's about making that moment better as I said in my response... it temporarily takes your mind off the things that you don't want your mind to be on. Just changing your mind is not always a feasible solution and depression is a real mental illness of it gets bad enough.. it can eventually manifest physically. I recommend that anyone thinking of harming themselves to get help. I know that, at least here in the States, there are hotlines to call... there are groups t join.. all free of charge non profits that help with these sorts of things. Being depressed does not equal being stupid even in the least.... but being uneducated on something and commenting on it surely is.. Mister Nerox3.

I understand they may have less clarity during times of depression but surely again, hurting yourself is just going to make other hurt aswell. God knows how I'd feel if someone had cut themselves because of something I've done, I genuinely don't know what i'd do.

Still doesn't mean a mental affect will be hugely significant.

That's like saying Pizza is good so Bacon is automatically shit lol. Both can be in the same category, just once is slightly more significant than the other

Unfortunately, Some people do not have the will power to pull themselves out of that dark hole. Everything around them is falling apart in their eyes and it's something that is not all the time controllable. Instead of being so close minded and flat out evil about the topic maybe you should try spreading positive energy to those who may come across this thread.

You never really know who could be reading this and who could really use that helpful advice.

On my personal views, I suggest that maybe they get someone to talk to. I don't think a person should have to go to hurting themselves or someone else to make themselves feel good. If it's someone who legitimately hates themselves, they most likely need someone to talk to because something has pushed them that far. Is there people who do it for attention? Absolutely, but there's also people who do it for their own self reasoning.

Neither does negativity, Nero.

At the end of the day we are all human beings and we all handle things in a different manner, some take it to the point they shouldn't that's why we shouldn't be so close minded and perjudge them as attention seeking when clearly they need help. We don't know their story or what they are going through.

That's too generic and doesn't delve into anything, that's like saying individuality leads to nothing.

If you have never done it, you will likely never understand it.

Yes, there are people who do it for attention. Yes, there are people who don't have legitimate reasons for doing it. But then you have someone like me. When I was younger, I did it, and I hid it. I didn't do it for attention. I just couldn't cope with emotional pain, and physical pain, well that I could. I was never suicidal, though I know some people who do this can be. In fact, I only ever did it on my legs, just above my ankles. I didn't want people to know I did it because I felt weak. When you get over loaded with so many emotions that you can't even grasp how to feel, inflicting pain shuts it off. Some people take drugs to cope, some people drink to cope, I never liked either of those things. It switches signals in the brain, I can't recall how to explain it but it does make things change. I know Angelina Jolie use to do it, she may have explained it better than I did if you are interested, I am sure you can find her explanation online. I don't expect most of you to understand it, but I figured I would give my point of view as I actually use to be a cutter.
