In an update on Rey Mysterio possibly leaving WWE soon, word now is that he may be looking to be released and WWE is considering granting it if they can keep merchandise rights. Other sources indicate that WWE really wants him to stay and will be doing everything in their power to keep him.

Rey should do a blow-off feud and then just retire for good. He's had a bad run over the past couple of years with injury.

This isn't much of an update its the same thing we've been hearing since just after he started teaming with Cara and decided to "take time off" for a "stomach flu"

Wow WWE is super money hungry eh? It's okay if you never walk again, we just want the rights to your shit.
As would any company that sells character based merch.

Mysterio would be Legend dealed and nothing else, he isn't agent material. And he would be terrible on commentary. What would Mysterio do outside of WWE? Also, could very easily use Rey Mysterio Jr or any variant his uncle was using.

How much more do WWE expect do get out of this guy aside from merch? His body has had it.

I just kind of thought that it was a bit ridiculous in order for him to be granted a release they had to have rights to his merch.

Can anybody else see Rey go part time like HHH? Sure he isn't a big name like HHH but he's still a draw and a credible legend of the sport.

As for his 'final run', I wouldn't mind seeing Punk retire him. If they wanted to have him go out on a high note, perhaps a WWE Title match against Cena in which before the match says it'll be his last or something.

WWE would milk Mysterio's merch and likeness, like they wanted to do with Hogan. Seeing as he is basically an icon in Latin America, would be something you can use for along time to come, they do have over 17 years of Mysterios career to use for DVDs.

Well, I hope he at least does one final run. It's too bad that he can't even hobble to Wrestlemania. Man, Rey makes a lot of money but he sure as hell has missed out on a lot of WM paychecks.

I'm sure if he gets released, he'll end up in TNA after he thinks he is "healthy" enough to compete.

This story comes out every year, usually some variant of "his knees are shot and he wants to go back to Mexico".

I expect it soon, but 50/50 on whether it's a good thing. He's one of my fave rasslers but his match quality has gone down the shitter lately. A shit Rey match is still better than what 99% of the roster can do on a good day, but still sad to see.

According to internet news sheets, Rey Mysterio has been sitting at home, renegotiating his contract for the past 5 years. It has come to the point where the cried wolf byproduct will rear its head when it comes to this. I've had my limit along time ago.

Still don't see what Rey could do outside of WWE, book AAA with Konnan? Live off shoot interviews and doing podcasts? His knees have been through over 20 years of springboarding ropoes, and anyone who has ever run the ropes will tell you, that shit is stiff. He has had 5 major surgeries on those knees. If he calls it a career, he will be HOF bound. He could go around telling youngboys at indies to tone down the flippy shit, because it would save 10 years on your career.

WWE is going to keep the rights to his likeness as they do with every wrestler, that's a no-brainer. And that's not something WWE would even have to negotiate with him on at this point considering the contracts those wrestlers sign with their promoters usually surrender all those rights to the promoters up front. So I'm pretty sure that report is bullshit because that just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

If there's anything keeping WWE from releasing him, it's to keep him from going to TNA and nothing else. Not that WWE should feel threatened about him going to TNA, but it could be that WWE has plans for some Rey Mysterio-related promotion in the immediate future, maybe a new dvd set or something, and him going to TNA would pretty much ruin any plans along those lines. Because seriously, as worthless as Rey is these days with his injuries, I can't think of a single other reason WWE would be reluctant to cut him off. I'm sure his contract isn't cheap either.

Give him one last run/match and then get rid of him as a wrestler but keep him on a legends deal. Give them a similar deal to what they offered to Show when he took time off a few years back so that they can still monetise his character. He would still earn a couple hundred thousand a year and he wouldn't have to put his body through any punishment. He could stay at home with his family and watch the royalty cheques roll in.

This. Let somebody like Fandango or Dolph Ziggler go over him in his retirement match. Guest appearances on RAW or SD every once in awhile or even managing another luchadore a few years down the road.
