Now, do you want me to rank the reigns? Or how much I like the person? Maybe how important I think the reign was? Or just whatever I think is the best for my own ranking? Cause I’ll have different answers depending

I would prefer people rank them by importance and how good their reigns made you feel. obviously everything is subjective and I dont love telling ppl how to rank stuff, but ideally it's what I am looking for + obviously some personal feelings - if you can write out why ppl are ranked where they are that is even better for discussion

#1 - Belt Collector Kenny Omega - IMO easily the most memorable World Champ run in AEW and the catalyst for Hangman's rise. Insane match quality throughout. Great segments and promos. Great heel turn. Great build to the loss to hangman. Pretty much a flawless run to me. That's my boy.

#2 Jon Moxley - The First Ace of AEW. If need champion, break glass. The perfect first face of AEW following an actually underated and possibly forgotten great feud with Jericho (eye for an eye mini feud with Santana, anyone?) Workhorse champ. Champ when everyone else fucked up. Never comaplined. Always showed up. Dude is awesome and I hope he is in AEW forever.

#3 Chris Jericho - CONTROVERSY ALERT! I know this may be an unpopular choice but people kind of forget how Jericho's first few years were really good. Inner Circle was a very hot faction at the beginning and they did a lot of very entertaining stuff. Jericho was not stale yet and he was a, imo, fantastic inaugural champion to put AEW on the map. He was also a really great foil for Jon Moxley to emerge as the first face of AEW.

#4 Hangman Adam Page - Our depressed cowboy. The second best title win in AEW history (kenny beating mox by cheating is my #1). The future. The blue chipper. 2 years build to the title win. a 200+ day reign (which ppl still shit on even though all his matches were aces outside the punk one). Would be higher if he had more intense feuds while being champion after the Omega one (mox and swerve feud are top tier but after his reign, unfortunately). His match vs Danielson is often forgotten and it pisses me off!

#5 Swerve Strickland - 5 might seem low but it's ,ore a question of the impact of the prior 4's reigns. Swerve was a fantastic champion and was built up, like hangman, the right way. They took their time to build him as a threat and it paid off huge. His reign was very solid with wins over huge names including Will Ospreay. His match quality while champ rivals Kenny and Hangman, which is a huge accomplishment and compliment. Swerve is the real deal.

#6 MJF - More controversial take, but I thought MJF's reign was a bit subpar at times. other times it was great, the brochacho stuff was fun and kenny match was fantastic. I do find myself thinking that his stuff when he wasnt champ was more fun. We also have to consider the end of the reign went over poorly with the majority of fans and it showcases a time where AEW was recovering not only from bad optics, but also overly leaned into the sports entertainment cheesyness aspect. This did not resonate with a lot of fans. Injuries to Cole and MJF also plagued this reign near the end, so similar to hangman, we never got any real closing ceremonies or payoffs. not yet at least. IT WAS ALSO TOO DAMN LONG

#7 Samoa Joe - I mean no disrespect to Joe, he was a very entertaining champion. HE was a transitional champ however, so his impact was not a huge one in the grand scheme of things. Regardless, he did his job, the reign felt good and he put over Swerve big. No complaints, Joe rules. But his reign as far as impact ranks low.

#8 CM PUNK - I am not going to go on a tagent with this dude, you all know how I feel by now about him. The ranking, however, has no personal feelings attached. It's simply because unfortunately, Punk was never able to ever have an actual reign. He won the title twice and unfortunately got injured and lost it. Then after he won it a second time, he was suspended 3 days later. The X belt was fucking stupid and it makes it worse for him tbh. Due to this factor, he is dead last.

Danielson - unranked because he just won

1) Mox: Made me very passionate about watching aew all the time as he showed why he left WWE so he could be himself what you see is what you get. Man mox is my favourite wrestler in AEW and showed why he's the top guy for a reason. Showed lots of his personality more and got some WWE fans of his to tune into the show.

2) Kenny Omega: His run was great. He went on a magnificent run collecting belts all around the world through him doing so I started watching other promotions again through this. Omega is one of the best wrestlers ever and his run was great.

3) Hangman Page: Was a great run due to him believing in himself and proved why he was given the opportunity to be champ. He gave all he had during the reign . Solidified his position as one of the top guys in AEW.

4) MJF) Showed He could be a Babyface during his run and solidified his spot as one of the top guys in aew and just not a one trick pony. His run was so damn good and for this I think he's better as Babyface rather than a heel ( Just a personal opinion)

5) Swerve Strickland: Not just making history but actually got better and better as each defence happened and showed the whole world he was more than capable of being the top guy in AEW. Made me like him even more .

6) Chris Jericho: Helped the company at the beginning and for this I will be grateful to him help get AEW established as promotion at the time for this I will be forever grateful.

7) Samoa Joe: Not disrespect to Joe but he was good as champion but however he only got the belt due to MJF's injury and was just holding the title till someone else showed they were good enough.

8) C.M.Punk : As much as I like punk he had to many injuries and didn't like the run . Mox said it honest enough. Was cashing checks his body couldn't handle.

1) Jon Moxley: I'm giving him the nod for a couple reasons. First is how he carried the company through rough patches. Pandemic. Post-Punk Injury and Post Brawl-Out. Basically, if you needed someone to do something and be a main eventer, Mox is your guy. He also generally was able to have good to great matches (Even if his hardcore brawling style isn't for everyone). Moxley is AEW's ace for a reason. He deserves his flowers and once he's done his well earned vacation, he is capable of winning the title again.

2) Kenny Omega: Apart from somewhat infrequent defenses, which has pros and cons, but was with reason due to him being banged up near the end, this was a near perfect reign. (Only 'flaw' was the pyro botch post Barbed-wire Death Match). It was done with purpose and while there was a clear end goal of getting the belt to Hangman, he still was able to have fun and interesting matches in the middle, something I think is a challenge for long title reigns.

3) Swerve Strickland: I'm giving him a nod. Not necessarily due to "impact" in the company's history but due to a few reasons. First, it was a great length. Not too long, but still a solid chunk of the year and it ended in a big way. But I also feel that he was able to evolve as a competitor during this reign, show a balance to his character. That he's beyond just being a face and a heel. He's a bad man, but if people support him, he's cool with you. He is also a likely future multi-time champion.

4) Chris Jericho: Another example of a reign being the right length of time. Jericho was a good choice as the first champion (Shame him near any title now, or TV time is a slog). Established history and legacy, and he gave legitimacy to the belt. He also lost to the right guy at the right time. Really no issues.

5) Hangman Page: The chase is better than the reign itself, but with how great a chase was, it is hard to match it. The start was great with him vs Danielson twice with two fantastic matches. Then came the Cole feud which had good to great matches, but I wish hit a little more given their shared history in BC/The Elite. Then came the Punk story. Backstage issues came to light and while I don't mind Hangman's general promo against Punk, trying to present him as Mr. AEW, seeing Punk as an outsider and not entirely trusting him given his past controversies, him dropping the "Worker's Rights" line ended up resulting in a lot of BS after and the match itself was okay, but rough around the edges. Though the entire saga came with mistakes from both Punk, The Elite camp, and TK, it was a sour end to a reign which was before that pretty good, almost great, though not amazing. I'm expecting he'll be back at the mountain top soon. So he can probably go up the list. #HangmanDidNothingWrong

6) MJF: This would probably be near the top if post All-In they were able to keep the momentum. Will be the longest post because I need to show the two sides of it.

Started with a fantastic moment of him writing off Regal and then beating Danielson in the Ironman. His Four-Pillars feud did stretch a little bit, but was a nice "moment" for them and had a fun/great match which especially helped Perry's arc. He got great heel heat against Tanahashi in a clash of styles which was good for what it was. Then the Face Turn going into All In. At that time he was too over to be a heel and I'd argue he could have still been a face today (though get the heel turn and it worked). The dynamic between him and Adam Cole was fantastic and created laughs, good matches, and a feel good moment at All In last year.

Then Punk got fired when we potentially were going to get the blow off to that story. (Also his suspension did hurt the win a bit).

Then Cole got hurt. First, the BBG/MJF feud itself was good. Though the Roll of Quarters line from Juice did get some flack, and had poor timing as it was the start of the War in Palestine with Israel. Then the match itself at the PPV. It was a good match as a whole. Though did result in MJF's own injuries. But the booking felt TOO super Cena esq. He goes out in an ambulance after getting nearly crippled, fights from underneath, wins. I don't think it buried Jay White like some claimed, but I think it was just a bit too much. If MJF was taken "To the trainer's room" and we got small updates during the night with no double bait and switch with Cole, then it would have been just the right level of "Babyface Scumbag fighting from underneath" without going to parody.

Then the Devil storyline. Idea makes sense. The people responsible made sense, but it dragged on and the tone didn't really fit well with AEW. It went the entire fall. Then the reveal was obvious, where people were hoping for something a bit more shocking as a final reveal with that much payoff. The UK also is hurt by Cole's own injury which sucks. Even if he got a few great matches in there, it was just something which didn't hit. But, he is likely to become champ again. Still giving him his praise for the highs of the reign and look forward to his next run, because when it was good, it was better than most, and I knew it.

7) Samoa Joe: Just a case of a solid reign, even if a transitional one, though didn't have a "WOW" moment, but gave a legend who can still go his flowers and put someone deserving over.

8) Vacant: Vacant added the AEW World Championship to his amazing resume, but much like most cases, was a transitional champ and refused to get pinned to drop the title. But his reign was a chance for AEW to 'reset' itself following the Brawl Out controversy which resulted in him claiming the title for the first time.

9) Bryan Danielson: Just won it, this is basically 'unranked.'

10) CM Punk: He's lower than the title being actually vacated and the guy who JUST won it. As much as I am an AEW fangirl, I can understand some of Phil's gripes early on. A line came out of nowhere in a promo which was a shoot, didn't like it, and he felt it wasn't being addressed well. But then him doing stuff like calling Hangman out in a promo when it wasn't scripted. THEN the All Out press conference, him saying "If you have a problem, my door is open." *Opens door, throws punch, friend bites man trying to protect his dog* and all the shit after like calling out Hangman and the Bucks in promos on Collision when they said "Look, we don't feel ready to talk yet, but if you can show you've grown and not cause shit for about six months, we'll talk" all hurt AEW long-term and they're still recovering. His controversies are tied to the title reign. Had to vent because looking at the reigns itself, it was an injury and interim status. Then for the Mox storyline, probably some flip flop backstage shit because Moxley also didn't appreciate some of his stuff, but the idea of him coming back, shock loss, then Rocky story bounce back from a crushing defeat to win COULD have been interesting, but it was so rushed. Then the All Out press conference, and he forever hurt AEW. This is a title reign which caused long-term damage to AEW behind the scenes and on screen wasn't able to get started due to injury and suspensions.

All I hope is Phil is happy in WWE now, and can end his career on his terms and maybe finds peace.

  1. Kenny Omega - easy peak of AEW during this reign to point out even if his reign wasn't always the best part of the show
  2. Jon Moxley - first reign didn't start out my favorite but ended up being great, emergency runs were absolutely fantastic
  3. MJF - I get the complaints but I think 85% of the run was amazing, it just ended with the bad angle that overtook everything
  4. Swerve - a borderline perfect reign in a lower time period creatively for the company, it lacked some hype of the other three, but thinking back, idk how I would have booked anything better
  5. Hangman - liked Danielson and Punk feuds, very underwhelming compared to the chase tho
  6. Chris Jericho - barely watched during the time, did like Chris then, but the reign never really drew me into the company anymore like Mox's did
  7. Samoa Joe - almost put him over Jericho bc the reign that shouldn't have happened was so good, great damage control after the Devil Angle to get stuff some way back on track too
  8. Punk - both actual wins were good, squash loss against Moxley was shocking but there's just nothing much to rank here lol

1. Kenny Omega: The way Kenny was during this run was just amazing, honestly was one of the hottest points for the company also, and the story that he told with Hangman at the end of the reign was imo one of the best stories AEW has told so far. A lot of the work he did between winning it, and losing it was also pretty fun.

2. Chris Jericho: Dude was the first World Champion, and part of what helped get AEW's footing. as others mentioned, where right now a lot of people are sour on Jericho, he was at the start of the company, one of the hottest acts, a well known name that it made sense to put the title on him as it helped bring eyeballs to the product.

3- Swerve: Was a wonderful reign, wonderful, dude made me even more of a fan of his during this, which at the start I had just not long came around to the guy, but during it he showed me why he was just so great. Amazing matches with some great talent along the way, and had one imo one of the most perfect endings to a reign in the titles history. I don't think it could've been wrote much better. I only put it here because I feel the two reigns above it did more to help AEW as a whole.

4. MJF: The longest reign with the title, a really great I would say first like 3/4th of the reign was amazing, the friendship of him and Adam Cole near the end of it was really fun, but them not getting to pay it off hurts it a little bit. if not for that I probably would have slot it in at number 3, but it has to instead come in at number 4

5. Moxley: It might be a little controversial to put him this low, but hear me out. The above reigns I either enjoyed more, or feel are just a little bit more important, that being said, this reign was pretty enjoyable, and had some pretty fun moments, the stuff with Kenny was really enjoyable, and despite the one match we do not talk about :lol there isn't to much I would change about his first one reign. The other two reigns are kind of what hurts it a little for me if I'm being honest.

6. Hangman: To tie it to what I said about Omega's at the top there, the end of that reign, was the start of this one, and it's one of the best stories AEW has told, and but the reign just didn't do much for me sadly, it just, was there. I liked the stuff with Punk a bit, but it led to a lot of stuff happening that just sadly didn't need to happen and I think that is what hurt the reign a little bit.

7. Samoa Joe: Sadly, something has to be the one that comes before Punk's in the ranking, and it's gotta be this one. If the devil storyline got to play out, this reign likely just doesn't happen sadly, so props to Joe for stepping up with someone had to step up, the reign wasn't bad but just doesn't top the others for me.

8. CM Punk: Sadly, the reign just didn't get to happen truly, as kept getting hurt, or he got into fights, and it just wasn't seen what he could do while being champion. I think if he actually got to have a legit reign he would've cracked the top five, easily, maybe even top 3, but we'll never know, and I wish him the best of luck in everything he's doing now.

I'm doing this purely on my enjoyment of the reign and how I enjoyed the feuds/the matches:

  1. Kenny Omega. Dear god this reign was beautiful. Going back to the moment he won it plus his amazing matches during the run leading to Hangman's rise and victory. A truly all time reign.
  2. Swerve Strickland. Hot take time? This is my 2nd fav world title reign so far. There is something to be said for not every reign needing to be long. I think we have gone too far the other way with too many mammoth reigns. It works for like Omega or Roman or GUNTHER but for other people? Nah a decent length reign works and 4 months was perfect here. Amazing matches and I'd argue that match quality wise on average, it might be my fav (Omega 3rd, Hangman 2nd). Everything from this reign I have enjoyed minus parts of the Danielson build. A second reign and he could easily overtake Omega for me.
  3. Jon Moxley. My guy. Always was my fav in the SHIELD and him finally getting the chance to be the ACE will always mean the world to me. The reign he had deffo has flaws but it was also stuff AEW could not avoid ala Covid. His matches with Brodie Lee and Eddie Kingston will always stand out to me. The interm reign covering for Punk's injury was fun and the one after Punk was Punk was fine (also in hindsight so glad this 1 month was not Bryan winning).
  4. Chris Jericho. Nearly swapped this with Hangman reign but overall, Jericho's reign worked for me story wise better than Hangman's. A great first reign and ended at the right time with Moxley.
  5. Hangman Page. I legit think if you had better booking of the feuds and more focus on Page, this would be top 3 easily cause the matches he had were fucking amazing. Cole, Danielson twice, Archer in Texas Death. The booking let Hangman down here and less said about Punk.
  6. Bryan Danielson. I know he just won it but I was there, singing the final countdown and near tears. That alone if he loses it Wednesday to Christian is enough to put it here.
  7. Samoa Joe. Yes this was a transitional reign but the Hook match plus the triple threat before losing to Swerve ruled. It did it's job and it is above...
  8. MJF. Hot take but the more I think about it, the more I don't like a lot of this reign and I don't even mean the Adam Cole stuff. Danielson feud I found a bit meh. One of the best Ironman matches ever which again makes me so mixed on this reign as there is a lot of good but... you had the pillars feud which was kind of eh. Match was again great. We also had that weird take a shit promo and some of MJF's mic work didn't feel as good as before. Adam Cole feud going into All In was great and people do re-write history. This was the highlight of his reign and the main event ruled. Then it went downhill fast. Jay White vs MJF is my most hated AEW PPV main by a fucking mile. I think Jay White has been overall booked fine but this was a fucking mess. Jay White losing makes sense. I don't think he should have won but to have him lose to a one-legged man, who was about to have a legit one legged man fight for him, just what the fuck was this shit Tony? And the whole match is made so bad by MJF not even properly selling the injury. Honestly this match alone is probs why I rank it this low. Joe leading up to World's End was there and the match was good considering MJF's state but yeah a very very mixed bag.
  9. CM Punk. To quote a chant from last night: "FUCK CM PUNK". Being serious an injury and then Punk being Punk ruined these. I do not count the real world title as a title reign

While extreme, I get it. I think it was just way too overbooked. Like I said, laid it on a bit too thick.
