I don't know if I feel the religious aspect was better off in the movie or not...

The problem is that its not really consistent. First its all about religion then later they all sort of throw it aside for survival.

once this stuff passes I'll be able to get into the film a little more but this part of the film seriously bums me out.

They would have been more likeable if they'd left the religion thing out, but as I say, some of them are still likeable. Certainly Clemons (outside of not showing us the picture!) is alright, as is Dillon.

Fun fact - those Bison-like animals are also heavily featured in the original AvP comic book series. And yes, they are used for the same thing in the comics. :
