But don't most musical artists want to be popular and have radio/mainstream success? That's what lots of musicians strive for, and even if it's metal, rap, country or anything else, almost everyone wants to be on the pop radio stations and get airplay.

I would categorize stuff like Soulja Boy and 50 Cent as Pop Rap imo.

Obviously I don't know anything about rap whatsoever
, but you'd never hear NaS, 2Pac, Biggie etc on the radio, while Soulja boy has gotten famous for one song over the mainstream radio & charts.

*Waits for Gates to enter thread and launch tirade on pop music ;)*

No you do not. Overally commercialized musicians are categorized as pop.
Single singers, three or more band members, super clean lyrics, Mom would like them, regulars on kid programs, are pop acts.

No. Like I said, pop music is a genre.
Popular rap like 50 cent can be considered pop culture, because it is, it's got a large following, and is mainstream, and commercial, so it's part of pop culture. But it's still considered rap. Not pop.

Pop music sucks (so does rap IMO), but you have to know the difference.

Pop music is still what it always has been. Britney Spearrs, Lindsay Lohan, boy band, girl band, etc, music. When a band gets popular it doesn't join the pop genre, it just becomes popular. Pop music the genre is the same..,

Pop culture however, does change. It changes to include whatever becomes popular. Many times, pop music will be part of pop culture, because it's popular, but other times, rock or rap (certain beands frome ach genre) may join pop culture, by becoming popular.

So like I've said all along, rock bands, no matter how popular, don't become part of the pop genre, unless they are pop.

On a side note, all this talk of popular culture and pop music makes me wanna puke

They are soooooooooo many different types of pop these days. Only pop I can even stand is country pop really. Its not to popish really but still gets played on pop station with a little remix to it. Which really I hardly hear them unless I'm in the car with my aunt and cousin cause they love Radio Disney then I gotta sit thought alot of pop music...blah...but good thing Taylor Swift is on there even if it is a remixed version of her songs.

these are all the styles of pop music that Wikipedia shows

Adult oriented · Arabesque/Skiladiko · Avant-pop · Baroque · Bubblegum · Christian · Country · Emo · Experimental pop music · Futurepop · Pop rock · Pop punk · Pop rap · Power pop · Synthpop & Electropop · Indie pop · Teen · Traditional · Sunshine · Modern Laika · Pop folk · Balkan • Manufactured · Dance · Yé-yé

But really all pop is some what populer just with different groups. The straight up Pop is mainly popular with small kids. Country Pop is popular with some country fans. Some hate it. Same with each and every kind of pop. But then you gotta also have that pop sound to it.

But yeah I know all this sounds confusing and dumb but look who posted it lol..me
