I would categorize stuff like Soulja Boy and 50 Cent as Pop Rap imo.
Obviously I don't know anything about rap whatsoever, but you'd never hear NaS, 2Pac, Biggie etc on the radio, while Soulja boy has gotten famous for one song over the mainstream radio & charts.
No. Like I said, pop music is a genre.
Popular rap like 50 cent can be considered pop culture, because it is, it's got a large following, and is mainstream, and commercial, so it's part of pop culture. But it's still considered rap. Not pop.
Pop music sucks (so does rap IMO), but you have to know the difference.
Pop music is still what it always has been. Britney Spearrs, Lindsay Lohan, boy band, girl band, etc, music. When a band gets popular it doesn't join the pop genre, it just becomes popular. Pop music the genre is the same..,
Pop culture however, does change. It changes to include whatever becomes popular. Many times, pop music will be part of pop culture, because it's popular, but other times, rock or rap (certain beands frome ach genre) may join pop culture, by becoming popular.
So like I've said all along, rock bands, no matter how popular, don't become part of the pop genre, unless they are pop.
On a side note, all this talk of popular culture and pop music makes me wanna puke
