Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead Sunday afternoon in his Manhattan apartment of an apparent drug overdose, according to law enforcement officials, The Wall Street Journal reported at around 1:30 pm EST.

Hoffman was reportedly found dead in his West Village Apartment. Although no cause of death has yet been established, as New York City Police continue to investigate. Early reports suggested that Hoffman, who was found in his bathroom, died of a drug overdose.

The actor had entered rehab briefly last May for heroin abuse, multiple outlets had reported. The actor had problems with substance abuse early in his life but had reportedly remained clean for more than two decades until his relapse last year.

Hoffman, 46, won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 2005 film, Capote and was nominated for three other best supporting actor Oscars, for his work in Charlie Wilson’s War, Doubt, and The Master. An acclaimed theater actor, he also received three Tony Award nominations.

Hoffman had a son and two daughters with his longtime partner, Mimi O’Donnell.

Man, I didn't know he had past problems of drug use, would've never expected him of all people to go likely due to drugs. So weird that he's gone so suddenly. Great actor. R.I.P.

Poor guy. Addiction sucks. At least we'll have his acting to remember him by. R.I.P.

One of the greatest actors of our generation and truly one of my favorites. Really sucks to think he'll never have another incredible performance in anything again, he was really on the top of his game recently, with his performance in The Master and whatnot. I've heard people say this wasn't shocking, but it sure shocked the shit out of me. The first I heard of his drug use was when he checked into rehab rather recently and never, ever thought this would happen. R.I.P. to one of the greats.

My favorite movie of his is likely one he doesn't even appear in, but he does the voice of the main character and it's an absolutely beautiful, both heart-warming and heart-breaking (even more so now I'm sure) claymation story. Mary and Max, such a gem and everyone should check it out.
