Umino keeps rolling pinning Sanada in the Main Event from the 24th Show. Naito sold the Death Rider as if he got shot by a Shotgun.

New Beginning in Sapporo night 1 (February 4) Preview

Two big singles matches atop wintery card

As a record breaking cold spell sweep northern Japan, Sapporo could certainly use some heating up, and will get just that when the New Beginning series hits Hokkai Kita-Yell on February 4 and 5. The first night of a massive double header will see new, but very personal issues playing out in ring as the tour reaches its biggest stop so far.
Watch the New Beginning live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: Shota Umino vs Tetsuya Naito
0204_08.jpg

The main event will see a first time singles collision for Shota Umino and Tetsuya Naito. While Umino has a family connection to the wrestling business through his father, referee Red Shoes Unno, it was Tetsuya Naito, in his Stardust Genius days that inspired him to lace up a pair of boots. As Umino’s superstar is on the rise though, he’s gotten short shrift from Naito, who hasn’t given the Roughneck the time of day, outwardly at least, on his own path to facing Keiji Muto in Muto’s final match on February 21.

It’s fallen to Umino then to put himself on Naito’s radar as well as the pro-wrestling map at large, something that he could do in a major way tonight. While tag team wins have shown how effective ‘Shooter’ is in ring, including on the massive stage of the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom 17, it would be a win over Naito that would see Umino plant the flag in a new era of NJPW. At the same time Naito, with the immense responsibility of ending Muto’s career later in the month, can not afford a high profile loss to Umino or anyone else.

7th Match: Taichi vs Will Ospreay
Singles record: 2-2

0204_07.jpg

The semi main event sees Taichi return to his hometown of Sapporo to face Will Ospreay. In the face of an emotional loss to Kenny omega in the Tokyo Dome, Ospreay set a one year time limit for himself in NJPW, and New Japan in the wrestling space. Ospreay feels that he needs to be at the very top of the very top worldwide promotion, and is picking the biggest fights he can to get there. First up that means the always dangerous Taichi in his home town in Sapporo.

Taichi and Ospreay face off for the first time in two and a half years tonight, and the first time since Ospreay formed what became the United Empire in 2020. Their most high profile encounter would be back in 2018, when Ospreay defeated Taichi for the NEVER Openweight Championship in a match that would eventually, via Kota Ibushi have a throughline to Kenny Omega on January 4 2023. This starting point could create a line back to Omega and much needed revenge, but only if the Commonwealth Kingpin can win- or survive. A devastating Dangerous Backdrop delivered in Korakuen Hall on January 24 saw damage on ospreay’s neck clearly exacerbated, and it’s likely Taichi will exploit that point. Post Suzuki-Gun, TAKA Michinoku said of himself, Taichi, DOUKI and Yoshinobu kanemaru that they were ‘Just Four Guys, with no records and no results’, but guys that plan on changing the face of NJPW in short order. Should Taichi leave Sapporo with his hand raised, he’ll be in a strong position to do just that.

6th Match- IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships: Catch 2/2 (Francesco Akira & TJP) vs Just Two Guys (Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI)
Direct tag record: 1-0 Kanemaru & DOUKI

0204_06.jpg

The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championships are on the line when Catch 2/2 look to make their fourth defence against Yoshinobu Kanemaru and DOUKI. In a typically turbulent title scene, Akira and TJP have brought stability as well as spectacle to the junior heavyweight tag space, with the division arguably garnering the most attention it has had in years. Consistent success is a key part of that story, but something that’s been less forthcoming when it comes to kanemaru and DOUKI. During Super Jr. Tag League it was over the current champs that Kanemaru and DOUKI secured their first points, and DOUKI would follow up on that with a direct pinfall over Akira at New Year’s Dash to secure this championship match. Certainly the records show that DOUKI is more than capable of capturing his first championship, and Kanemaru his seventh time with the junior tag belts; but can they pull off the win where it matters most?

5th Match: Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano, Ryusuke Taguchi & YOH vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (Shingo Takagi, SANADA, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI)
0204_05.jpg

Eight man tag team action sees a pair of championship previews, Shingo Takagi and Kazuchika Okada a week away from their Osaka IWGP World heavyweight title showdown on February 11 while Hiromu Takahashi and YOH will go face to face over the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship in Sunday February 5’s main event. Meanwhile as that story is centered around a newly invigorated and confident challenger to Hiromu’s crown, SANADA has been confronted with a slump and a need to, in his words ‘start from square one’. Can he begin that build in the same town he began an ill fated US title reign in 2022?

4th Match: Master Wato, Hikuleo, Tama Tonga & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori, Jay White, KENTA & El Phantasmo)
5_5-3.jpg

Eight man action will see a clutch of Osaka previews. All four pairings of Wato and Ishimori, KENTA and Tanahashi, Tama Tonga and El Phantasmo and Hikuleo and Jay White will be meeting on February 18, but while the NEVER Openweight Championship is on the line for Tama and ELP, the stakes are at their highest for Hikuleo and Jay White. One or the other will be wrestling their final match in Japan in the EDION Arena; with White now a month removed from an emotionally driven challenge to Hikuleo, what ground will he be laying in Sapporo to ensure that he keeps his spot as the Catalyst of Professional Wrestling in japan as well as elsewhere?

3rd Match: Yuto Nakashima, Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI vs TMDK (Kosei Fujita, Zack Saber Jr. Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls
4_11-3.jpg

The second night in Sapporo on February 5 will see the NJPW World Television Championships and IWGP tag team titles both on the line; Bishamon will defend against Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls while Zack Sabre Jr. faces the challenge of Tomohiro Ishii. With CHAOS taking a different Young Lion to battle every night against TMDK, there’s been a series of on the job training sessions for ‘official TMDK Young Lion’ Kosei Fujita through this tour. Tonight though, it might not be class in session as the title contenders focus on key matches Sunday.

2nd Match: Ren Narita, Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado & Ryohei Oiwa vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL, SHO, Yujiro Takahashi & Dick Togo)

2_10-2.jpg

In the wake of Suzuki-Gun’s dissolution at the end of 2022, a like minded independent spirit and predilection for pain meant that El Desperado and Minoru Suzuki maintaining friendly relations was not a big surprise. More of a shock were the overtures the duo have made to Ren Narita since the start of the year; overtures that the Son of Strong Style still doesn’t seem to have processed or understood. Meanwhile Suzuki himself has made it very clear that he wants the NEVER Openweight 6 Man Tag Team Championships, titles officially held, but not worn by, EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi and SHO. The H.O.T duo are adamant that they have retired the belts, and with their prospective opposition, no small wonder. Suzuki, Narita and Desperado will be fighting to make sure this NEVER 6 Man retirement honors the tradition of many a wrestling retirement- ie that the belts get very unretired very quickly.

1st Match: Oskar Leube vs Great-O-Khan
1_3-3.jpg

We start in Sapporo with singles action as great-O-Khan faces Oskar Leube. Having started the tour with a painful loss to Shingo takagi, Great-O-Khan is unlikely to be in a gracious mood. How long can the German Young Lion Leube survive the Dominator’s punishment?

Felt like Shooter/Naito went a little long, crowd wasn't as hot for the middle part but still a really good match too. Taichi/Ospreay MOTN with the junior title match close behind tho

New Beginning in Sapporo Night 2 (February 5) Preview

Three championship matches in Hokkaido February 5

The second night of our double header in Hokkai Kita-Yell will see the NJPW World TV, IWGP Tag and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championships on the line, with hot action coming to the frozen climes of Sapporo.
Watch LIVE in English on NJPW World!

Main event: IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship- Hiromu Takahashi vs YOH
Singles record: 3-1 Hiromu

0205_08.jpg

YOH challenges IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hiromu Takahashi in our main event. With YOH being a Dojo generation removed from Hiromu, the two are well familiar with one another, that familiarity highlighted by brutal chop fests in YOH’s immediate return from excursion alongside then partner SHO in tag action, and then in the longest Best of the Super Jr. final in history in December 2021.

Yet the YOH that stands opposite Hiromu is a different man to the one the champion has faced in the past. Transformed by his recent partnership with Lio Rush, YOH is finally wrestling with a confident aggression hitherto unseen, even when YOH did log his first singles victory over the Time Bomb during last year’s BOSJ tournament. That night, Hiromu was dealing with the effects of a hurt knee, and will be heading to Sapporo at 100%, but YOH knows he can beat Hiromu (he’s even had Ryusuke Taguchi’s ultimate strategy guide to hand of late to help him do it), and he’s helped by Hiromu’s hectic schedule.

Over less than a one month span, Hiromu will go from YOH, to battling GHC Junior Heavyweight Champion AMAKUSA at Keiji Muto’s retirement event in Tokyo Dome, to being a key figure in March 1’s All Star Jr. Festival 2023. With a lot weighing on the mind of the champion, the timing is arguably the best it could be for the CHAOS challenger- could he finally secure his first career singles gold?

7th Match: NJPW World TV Championship: Zack Sabre Jr. vs Tomohiro Ishii
Singles record: 3-3

0205_07.jpg

The first defence of the new NJPW World Television Championship will see Tomohiro Ishii challenge the first champion Zack Sabre Jr. The NJPW World TV title sees matches play out with a 15 minute time limit, encouraging high speed and intense offence. Not to say that Ishii and ZSJ need the encouragement. The two first collided in the tournament to crown the first IWGP United States Champion back in 2017, and every single battle since has been impactful and full throttle in its approach. With wild brawls before, during and after the bell in their meetings on the road to Sapporo, this will be no different; but after finally having secured his first singles title in NJPW, can he extend his reign through its first defence?

6th Match: IWGP Tag Team Championships: Bishamon (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) vs TMDK (Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls)
Tag record: 1-0 Bishamon

0205_06.jpg

Bishamon picked up the double double at Wrestle Kingdom 17, converting their second straight World Tag League trophies into the IWGP Tag Team Championships. Now in their first defence of their second reign, they face Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls of TMDK. The Australian duo were the last obstacles for Bishamon en route to the World Tag League finals in December, and both the Haste and Nicholls combo and Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis of Aussie Open were chagrined at not having an all Australian WTL final match. Now Mad Mikey and Hysterical Shane have the chance to make good on national pride by instead being the first Australian IWGP Tag Team Champions.

5th Match: Ryusuke Tagucghi, Shota Umino, Toru Yano & Kazuchika Okada vs Los Ingobernables De Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, SANADA & BUSHI)
0205_05.jpg

A championship preview of Shingo Takagi vs Kazuchika Okada next week in Osaka sees eight man action in Sapporo. We will be less than 24 hours removed from Shota Umino and Tetsuya Naito’s night one collision to boot, making for a heated set of exchanges to come.

4th Match: Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga, Hikuleo & Jado) vs BULLET CLUB (Jay White, El Phantasmo & Gedo)
0205_04.jpg

A six man preview of February 11 in Osaka sees the Guerrillas of Destiny face Jay White, El Phantasmo and Gedo of BULLET CLUB. ELP finally gets his hands on NEVER Openweight Champion Tama Tonga this weekend and will be looking to state his championship case, while Hikuleo and Jay White are getting ready for their Loser Leaves Japan match next week. Adding to the tense atmosphere, long time partners and former friends Jado and Gedo have each tried to raise stakes when it comes to their charge’s matches; Gedo has demanded that Jado leave should Hikuleo lose on February 11, while Jado fired back that Gedo would be nowhere without Jay White and should also be packing his bags.

3rd Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Master Wato vs BULLET CLUB (KENTA & Taiji Ishimori)
0205_03.jpg

With a wave of big championship action coming up in both Sapporo and Osaka in the coming days, there should also be attention paid to the non title special singles matches both on February 4 and February 11. With there still being time between New Beginning and New Japan Cup tours, there’s every chance that championship opportunity could come knocking for any winners of non title action, including Master Wato’s bout with Taiji Ishimori and KENTA versus Hiroshi Tanahashi on February 11. Don’t take your eyes off what could be a key preview tonight.

2nd Match: Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado, Ren Narita & Yuto Nakashima vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL, Yujiro Takahashi, SHO & Dick Togo)
0205_02.jpg

Ren Narita might still be having trust issues with Minoru Suzuki and El Desperado, but things are much more clear when it comes to their opponents tonight. HOUSE OF TORTURE are never to be trusted, especially with the NEVER Openweight 6 Man Tag team Championships. SHO, Yujiro and EVIL are insisting that they’ve ‘retired’ the titles, almost certainly in a bid not to face the King, and his prospective new partners. Their hands may be forced tonight in our second bout.

1st Match: United Empire (Will Ospreay, Great-O-Khan, TJP & Francesco Akira) vs Just Four Guys (Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI & TAKA Michinoku)
0205_01.jpg

Starting the night’s action, United Empire go up against just Four Guys. In this eight man match, sparks are sure to fly, after last night’s IWGP Jr. Tag Championship bout, and Taichi and Will Ospreay’s grudge match with Taichi- don’t miss a second!
