Main event: Tetsuya Naito vs Taichi
Singles record: 4-4
Tetsuya Naito goes head to head with Taichi in the main event of night one in Osaka. When Tetsuya Naito and SANADA challenged, and defeated Dangerous Tekkers to seize IWGP Tag team gold in Sapporo July 11, Taichi was quick to demand a rematch along with his partner. It was with respect to SANADA that the deposed champions appealed, however, as both Taichi and ZSJ have little love for Naito.
In Taichi’s case, a connection to Naito stretches all the way back to both men’s earliest days in NJPW, Taichi having transferred from All Japan while Naito was still a rookie. Years later, when Taichi turned heavyweight in 2018, it was under Naito’s provocation, and Taichi sought to make a violent mark on El Ingobernable in his first match in the division. Losses followed for Taichi, even as he brought Takashi Iizuka as an insurance policy to an IWGP Intercontinental Championship challenge in Sapporo in 2019, but that summer, the spirit of Iizuka turned the tides.
The Iron Fingers From Hell helped Taichi to G1 Climax victory over Naito two years ago, but in 2021, neither metallic hands, nor partners past or present will be a factor in this singles main event. That isn’t to say the Holy Emperor is above bending the rules in some other direction however. Will Taichi gain the advantage before the Tokyo Dome tonight, or will it be Naito triumphant in the first of two Osaka main events?
5th Match: SANADA vs Zack Sabre Jr.
Singles record: 3-3
SANADA and Zack Sabre Jr. will continue their own storied rivalry in the semi main event tonight. Sabre has recently professed a grudging respect for Cold Skull after six singles confrontations have left them with an even 3-3 record. Respect hasn’t always been de rigeur however. Their first meeting in 2018’s New Japan Cup saw Sabre score a submission victory that inflated the Briton’s considerable ego, while subsequent G1 wins for SANADA have sent ZSJ into a petulant rage.
Still Sabre can say that in every non G1 environment, he has the upper hand on his opponent tonight. From that New Japan Cup, to a UK encounter for the British heavyweight Championship, to the Tokyo Dome in 2020, ZSJ has proven superior. Will that continue to be the case in Summer Struggle? With submissions or flash pinfalls possible at any given second, this is a hard one to call.
4th Match: Master Wato & Tomoaki Honma vs Los ingobernables De Japon (Shingo Takagi & BUSHI)
With Kota Ibushi absent from action in Osaka and Nagoya, Tomoaki Honma will fill his place to take on Shingo Takagi and BUSHI. What action will the champion take as his challenger’s status is to be confirmed?
3rd match: CHAOS (Hirooki Goto & Kazuchika Okada) vs United Empire (Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan)
With a singles confrontation against Jeff Cobb set for Wrestle Grand Slam July 25, Kazuchika Okada faces the Imperial Unit in tag action tonight. After Jeff Cobb’s disrespect toward the Rainmaker in Sapporo extending to calling Okada a ‘young boy’, Okada will have some serious malintent for Cobb and O-Khan tonight. Meanwhile, Hirooki Goto will provide some vicious backup in his own right, having already beaten the United Empire when teaming with YOSHI-HASHI during World tag League. Will Osaka bring similar success?
2nd Match: Tomohiro Ishii, Hiroshi Tanahashi & YOSHI-HASHI vs BULLET CLUB (EVIL, KENTA & Yujiro Takahashi)
The second match of the evening will see Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tomohiro Ishii continue their issues with KENTA and EVIL. After a weekend battle in Korakuen Hall saw Tanahashi and Ishii laid out by BULLET CLUB, time is running out for the Ace and the Stone Pitbull to return the favour before singles clashes in Nagoya Saturday. What will Osaka bring?
1st Match: CHAOS (Robbie Eagles, SHO & YOH) vs Suzuki-Gun (El Desperado, Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI)
Kicking off the evening, Robbie Eagles joins Roppongi 3K to take on a Suzuki-Gun trio of DOUKI, Yoshinobu Kanemaru and IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado. Saturday in Korakuen, Eagles submitted DOUKI with the Ron Miller Special, sending a clear message to champion Desperado before Wrestle Grand Slam. He’ll look to maintain that momentum in our opener tonight.
Summer Struggle in Osaka night two (July 23) Preview
More singles previews of tag title action
After Zack Sabre Jr. met SANADA, and Tetsuya Naito faced Taichi in night one in Osaka, situations will be reversed on night two.

Main event: Zack Sabre Jr. vs Tetsuya Naito
Singles record: 3-2 Naito
Headlining our second night in Osaka will be Tetsuya Naito in one on one action with Zack Sabre Jr. A 3-2 record in Naito’s favour includes wins in their last two singles contests, and one win right here in EDION Arena Osaka. Yet that belies the fact that Naito finds ZSJ’s submission stylings hard to deal with, distaste for the Briton tempered with grudging admiration: and the knowledge he knows exactly what buttons to press to irritate Sabre.
Zack is much more straightforward about his hatred for Tetsuya Naito, going as far as suggesting that only SANADA was a viable challenger in advance of their IWGP Tag Team Championship match in Sapporo two weeks ago. Yet Naito’s viability was more than adequately demonstrated in the culmination of that bout, Naito ringing ZSJ up for Destino to score the deciding pinfall. ZSJ has a history of letting personal pride and frustration get in the way of results; can he produce in Osaka 48 hours before the tag titles are on the line?
5th Match: Taichi vs SANADA
Singles record: 1-0 SANADA
SANADA takes on Taichi in the fifth match of the evening, with a longer history than their sole singles match indicates. Both SANADA and Taichi started their professional wrestling journeys in All, rather than New, Japan, where they learned under the notoriously tough Toshiaki Kawada. Both also have a common connection to Satoshi Kojima, with Taichi a member of Kojima-gun before jumping ship with Minoru Suzuki, and SANADA having worked as Kojima’s attendant back in AJPW.
Yet in ring there is only one singles match to go on, that being the quarterfinals of New Japan Cup 2020. There SANADA persisted with an O’Connor Roll victory despite the best interference and low blow efforts from Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Taichi respectively. Will this be a similarly filthy fight in Osaka? Who comes out on top? Time will tell.
3rd Match: CHAOS (YOSHI-HASHI & Kazuchika Okada) vs United Empire (Jeff Cobb & Great-O-Khan)
After teaming with Hirooki Goto on night one in Osaka, Kazuchika Okada partners with YOSHI-HASHI tonight against the United Empire’s Jeff Cobb and Great-O-Khan. With a significant win over Cobb and O-Khan during World Tag League, it appears that between then, Goto and YOSHI-HASHI have the secret sauce to beating a truly intimidating tag team. Can the Headhunter impart some wisdom to the Rainmaker tonight, and will that give Okada a significant advantage before facing Cobb in the Tokyo Dome Sunday?
2nd Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano vs BULLET CLUB (EVIL, KENTA & Yujiro Takahashi)
The second match of the night will see Hiroshi Tanahashi and Tomohiro Ishii clash with Nagoya opponents KENTA and EVIL for the final time before their singles clashes on Saturday night. With a lot of ill will brewing between every participant, what will this six man bout bring?
1st Match: Rocky Romero, Ryusuke Taguchi & Hirooki Goto vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori, El Phantasmo & Jado)
The action kicks off tonight with the Mega Coaches and Hirooki Goto taking on IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Taiji Ishimori and El Phantasmo, along with Jado. After Romero picked up a pinfall victory against Phantasmo in Sapporo, and then singles matches saw the Tokyo Dome tag team challengers go 1-0-1 in singles competition, it seems as if the Mega Coaches have the number of the champions. Can they prove that one more time tonight, before all the marbles are at stake Sunday?
