Finlay gotta be the funniest guy ever saying he won't challenge for the World Title if he wins the G1. If RVD during his TV Title run in ECW told me nah I don't want to challenge for the World Title because this TV Title means more than that because of my efforts I would of believed him. Finlay tells me that same thing and I'm like nobody wants your Global Title what are you talking about :lol

G1 Climax 34 night 18 (August 17) Full card, preview

G1 semifinal card set

The long G1 tour has hit its final stop, as two days in Ryogoku will see the Strongest of the Summer determined.

Watch live in English on NJPW World!

Main event: G1 Climax 34 Semifinal- Shingo Takagi vs Zack Sabre Jr

Singles record: 3–2 Takagi
1*fJKN5j_Z2yEwA_UV4ww63A.jpeg

G1 Climax A Block winner Zack Sabre Jr. will take on first round playoff winner Shingo Takagi in the main event tonight. This marks the third time that the two have met in the semifinal of a prestigious tournament; in 2009 it was the WxW 16 Carat in Germany, and in 2022 the New Japan Cup. Takagi was victorious in March of 2009 and went on to win the entire tournament, while Sabre had sufficient revenge 13 years later. Now it’s a semifinal rubber match of sorts, and this time with inarguably the highest stakes.

Shingo carries added momentum into the night, knowing that he defeated ZSJ during the league phase, and having repeated an earlier league victory against Great-O-Khan to work his way into this main event. Having won his last three singles matches in Sumo Hall, Takagi must be feeling good about his chances of avenging the defeat he incurred in his sole main event in the building to Will Ospreay in the Best of the Super Jr. 2019 final.

Conversely, malevolent spirits seems to circle around ZSJ when it comes to Ryogoku; both of his New Japan Cup victories in 2018 and 2022 were followed by defeat over the IWGP title in Sumo Hall. For years its been a reminder of the eternal British struggle, and that ‘it’s coming home’ has long been a hollow rallying cry. Could this year be different, or will the Summer of Shingo carry on to the finals?

7th Match: G1 Climax 34 Semifinal- Yota Tsuji vs David Finlay

Singles record: 1-1
1*t0dNiYfrobZojdPuwmA7BA.jpeg

A more direct rubber match in the other of our semifinals pits Yota Tsuji against IWGP Global Champion David Finlay.

The two combatants, who have traded wins in 2024 have very different visions of NJPW, but both share a common desire to make history. Inspired to ‘do something nobody has ever done before’, Tsuji wants to be the first man ever to win both the New Japan Cup and the G1 Climax in the same calendar year. Finlay meanwhile has already done what nobody has before in 2024, becoming the first, and then the third IWGP Global heavyweight Champion. Now declaring that his white and gold is ‘far above’ the status of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, Finlay has promised to main event Wrestle Kingdom with the Global title. Still one more match will separate both men from achieving their goals, but who will advance a step closer tonight?

6th Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI vs United Empire (HENARE, Great-O-Khan & Francesco Akira)

1*8a8O27r18qsYzgS9R1LcVA.jpeg

The first round of the G1 playoffs Thursday in Makuhari didn’t go United Empire’s way as Shingo Takagi advanced past Great-O-Khan. Earlier in the night though, UE were victorious in tag team action against Los Ingobernables De Japon, with HENARE holding the high ground with his NEVER Openweight Championship over IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Tetsuya Naito. Naito took four losses over the course of his G1 campaign, including to Great-O-Khan; while he seeks to reassert himself as NJPW’s top champion, this six man tag may be an ideal time to do so. Meanwhile, with Washington DC showdown with Mustafa Ali confirmed, what statement will Hiromu Takahashi make tonight?

5th Match: Just Five Guys (DOUKI, Taichi & TAKA Michinoku) vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori, Drilla Moloney & Clark Connors)

1*on5vbEWCeoADF_q75sLCIA.jpeg

IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI returned to the ring after a summer break from the cerulean blue on Thursday, and it wasn’t long before someone stepped up to be the first challenger. Taiji Ishimori confronted Japones Del Mal saying that ‘you said if anybody had a problem with you as champion they should step up, and I’m stepping up’. DOUKI has beaten two of the ‘big three’ in the junior heavyweight establishment of late, with wins over El Desperado and Hiromu Takahashi, but the third of that three in Ishimori will represent a different challenge. The dominant IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Champions Clark Connors and Drilla Moloney return to the mix as well for what should be a hard fought trios bout.

4th Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi, Toru Yano, Boltin Oleg, Tiger Mask & Ryusuke Taguchi vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL, SHO, Ren Narita, Yujiro Takahashi & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)

1*FQ0k4upcgn4yRhjD7zUYaA.jpeg

Ten man tag team action see the Hontai forces unite to face HOUSE OF TORTURE. Hiroshi Tanahashi held dealing with H.O.T as one of the key ten points of his reign as President, and declared he wasn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty in that regard. After NEVER Openweight 6 man Champions Tanahashi, Toru Yano and Boltin Oleg took care of H.O.T in six man competition Thursday, they stopped a post match attack from the House later in the night as well. With sides even at five on five, do H.O.T have a chance against the forces of justice?

3rd Match: Shota Umino, El Phantasmo & Jado vs Konosuke Takeshita, Jeff Cobb & Callum Newman

1*BSclftIpevmoCODZRxeY7w.jpeg

Konosuke Takeshita’s alliance with the United Empire has been an uneasy one through his G1 campaign, but with his tournament now over, he stays with UE for this six man contest. Takeshita has been in high demand from factions across NJPW, who would have no issue with the Alpha staying around before returning to AEW rings, and a lot of that demand came from his memorable Korakuen battle with El Phantasmo. A heart to heart with Shota Umino backstage Thursday night saw the Roughneck encourage Phantasmo to keep his head up in tough times; will ELP find his smile again in Ryogoku?

2nd Match: Hirooki Goto & Tomoaki Honma vs BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Gabe Kidd & Jake Lee)

1*2lwy__EiZ_nsz3v30C_8gQ.jpeg

The ‘Mad Bastards’ team of Gabe Kidd and Jake Lee, fresh off a win against Francesco Akira and Jeff Cobb Thursday, face another tag team bout tonight. Hirooki Goto will be teaming with Tomoaki Honma rather than his regular Bishamon partner of YOSHI-HASHI; will this CHAOS/Hontai blend be cohesive enough to deal with Lee and Kidd?

1st Match: YOSHI-HASHI & Shoma Kato vs TMDK (Mikey Nicholls & Robbie Eagles)

1*RIT0IcnmqQdsgxjsbvDRCQ.jpeg

Mikey Nicholls and Robbie Eagles of TMDK are back in Japan, with Nicholls representing as double NJPW STRONG and IWGP Tag Team Champion as the duo face YOSHI-HASHI and Shoma Kato. YOSHI-HASHI will be working hard to remind Nicholls that Bishamon are still a force to be reckoned with in the tag team space, while Eagles looks to make his own mark in his first NJPW action since Best of the Super Jr.

I might be not happy Tsuji beat Takeshita but here we are in the Semi-Finals. Just for clarify Tsuji has had 2 prior Title shots for the IWGP World Title one against Sanada, and vs Naito after he won the New Japan Cup. Now you're going to give the guy possibly a third time for it if he beats Finlay which he will yeah not happy about that at all considering I've haven't been that content with his performance in the G1 Climax itself. Shingo will lose to Sabre JR and even if he beats Tsuji I don't know where they go with Sabre JR as World Champion. I hope they have a plan which they haven't shown as of yet since Okada, and Ospreay left for AEW.

G1 Climax 34 Final (August 18) Full card, preview

Grand final in Ryogoku

The month long quest to find the Strongest of the Summer is at a close, as Ryogoku Sumo Hall will see the G1 Climax 34 winner crowned. After the hottest tournament of the summer, the hottest match of the summer will cap off the G1, but who will be the victor?

Main event: G1 Climax 34 Final- Yota Tsuji vs Zack Sabre Jr.

Singles record: 1–0 Sabre
1*fPzDHLqR0cACdjFK9_1ieQ.jpeg

There couldn’t be a further separation from Zack Sabre Jr. and Yota Tsuji’s first NJPW singles match to this. On June 22, 2021, Kizuna Road saw the two in the opening match in Korakuen Hall before a pandemic restricted, non cheering crowd while Tsuji was a Young Lion. Over three years on, and they will be in the main event of a packed Ryogoku Sumo Hall G1 Climax final card.

Sabre was in the ascendancy while Tsuji’s ascendancy was slowed by the pandemic, and through the toughest times for New Japan, both stuck through with the determined faith that the best professional wrestling in the world takes place on the cerulean blue. For ZSJ in A Block and Tsuji in B, both have proven that point, and less than 24 hours before this final, the point was again proven in a pair of punishing semifinal bouts.

Yet whether distant or recent, that is past history. Now both want to craft their futures, the future of NJPW, and make history of their own. For Sabre, the challenge is to do what Will Ospreay could not in 2022 and become the first ever British winner of the G1, and only the second non Japanese in history to earn that mantle. For Tsuji, the chance to become the first man ever to win NJPW’s spring and summer tournaments, New Japan Cup and G1 Climax in the same year. For both the act of winning the most prestigious tournament in professional wrestling- being the 19th member of the elitist class to do so- cements them as the standard bearer of NJPW in months and years to come.

7th Match: Los Ingobernables De Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI) vs United Empire (HENARE, Jeff Cobb, Great-O-Khan & Callum Newman)

1*cSs6SxFRcw7KGLQ4Tg_oEg.jpeg

Tag team action on the undercard last night in Ryogoku saw United Empire victorious over LIJ, and words accompanied actions in the post match. As Great-O-Khan trapped Tetsuya Naito in the same knee bar that helped him to victory over the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion in the G1, O-Khan stated backstage that he wanted a shot at Naito’s gold. Meanwhile, Hiromu Takahashi, driven by the prospect of finally having a singles match with Naito down the line, and convinced he can make it happen in a champion vs champion environment, has challenged HENARE for the NEVER gold. Both of those bold claims must be backed up tonight, and this heated eight man is definitely one to keep a close eye on.

6th Match: El Phantasmo, Shota Umino, Boltin Oleg, Toru Yano & Hiroshi Tanahashi vs HOUSE OF TORTURE (EVIL, Ren Narita, Yujiro Takahashi, SHO & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)

1*uiy5aCIM2VPa3yzBazenPQ.jpeg

Ten man action pits Hontai against HOUSE OF TORTURE tonight. At the end of a mentally demanding G1 Climax, Shota Umino’s encouragement seemed to help El Phantasmo turn things around, but recent miscommunications with Jado has added to ELP’s stress. HOUSE OF TORTURE has long had a sinister cult like ability to prey on those at their most vulnerable, and EVIL’s haunting taunt to Phantasmo last night of ‘are you sure you can trust (Hontai)’? Has set an omenous stage to our sixth match of the night.

5th Match: Tomoaki Honma, YOSHI-HASHI & Hirooki Goto vs BULLET CLUB War Dogs (David Finlay, Gabe Kidd & Jake Lee)

1*6fiH0Vkh3s60jIm5exk5Mw.jpeg

The now officially named combination of the Mad Bastards, Gabe Kidd and Jake Lee, want to get their hands on IWGP Tag Team gold as quickly as possible. That means taking on the current champions Shane Haste and Mikey Nicholls, but with Haste in absentia in LA, the best way to prove a point today will be to get a win over one of the most dominant forces in NJPW tag team wrestling of late, that of Bishamon. A victory voer YOSHI-HASHI or Hirooki Goto will be the goal today, but Finlay has his own statement to make after being bounced from the G1 semifinals last night.

4th Match: Just Five Guys (DOUKI, SANADA & TAKA Michinoku) vs BULLET CLUB (Taiji Ishimori, Drilla Moloney & Clark Connors)

1*HjrMIayZHqhL0XD-Rr3Tnw.jpeg

Taiji Ishimori has called his shot on the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion DOUKI for a title match somewhere and sometime in the near future. For DOUKI, accepting was never a question; a win over the only member of the so called ‘big three’ of the junior heavyweight division he has yet to beat will automatically legitimize his title reign, and we can see a preview of that match tonight. For Connors and Moloney though, in Japan for this final weekend, what do they have in store to make a mark?

3rd Match: TMDK (Mikey Nicholls & Robbie Eagles) vs Francesco Akira & Konosuke Takeshita

1*OCoItFA8qmfU1ixyOH-iDg.jpeg

There is no doubt that Konosuke Takeshita is in high demand from NJPW factions and fans after a stunning debut G1 Climax tour; the Alpha is well aware of the voices, and has asked for ‘time to think’ on when or if he comes back to the cerulean blue, and if so, who with. In the meantime though, Mikey Nicholls and Robbie Eagles want this final day to be about them, and about TMDK.

2nd Match: Taichi vs Katsuya Murashima

1*W7Hr16NJqbSinUql8TNsng.jpeg

It’s a tough test for Katsuya Murashima in the second match of the afternoon as he faces Taichi. With a summer off the Holy Emperor never wanted, Taichi wants to hit the ground running and hit hard against the Young Lion tonight. Can Murashima survive?

1st Match: Ryusuke Taguchi, Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs Shoma Kato, Tiger Mask & Yuji Nagata

1*2dVSptxFcbCTwemrXlG0dA.jpeg

A special attraction six man tag to start the afternoon will see Shoma Kato in elite company. A parade of former G1 Climax and Best of the Super Jr. winners will welcome the fans to Ryogoku on G1 final day.
