My vote is for the Barrel of Doom in Sonic 3. It made me ragequit the game. A friend had to tell me how to proceed...Three years later...

Here's a video of the infamous obstacle:

Almost all 80's games where you could not save and you died on the last level and had to start all over again

I hated it so much but I couldn't stop playing. It definitely led to the most bite marks on my controller.

Dude that game along with Gauntlet was terribly frustrating especially when you hit level 100 thinking I have beat this and it keeps going.

And there are still holes in my mom and dad's walls from me and my brothers hitting the wall with the NES joypad

I will say, getting to the last level of Hudson's Adventure Island for the NES back in the 1980s. Man, you get to the very end of a long and aggravating game, and once you get killed you start over from the beginning. Once you beat the damn game, you go back to the very beginning. It seems like a lot of 1980s games had this type of formality amongst them. I'm glad that most games evolved and you can still defeat a game, but your endings will be a bit different.

I know what you mean. That game required precise jumping. The problem is the jumping mechanics were extremely archaic, even for the time. And it was very unrewarding indeed.

Did it seem like Adventure Island was just a Tropical Version of Ghouls and Ghosts?
