Cody disappeared from BTE at the same time so I think there may have been a reason for that, but we may never know the whole story.

I also think Tony taking the book also negatively impacted Cody’s booking. Cody definitely knew how to get himself over. That might have been the one area I’d have let Cody retain if I was Tony.

I personally think it makes far more sense because as much as I like punk that angle had so little heat from what I remember in the buildup like it just kind of came out of nowhere but Cody and Hangman had history.

I would’ve personally even had Cody beat him at double or nothing because I personally do think Cody should’ve been the AEW champion at some point but I think that would’ve been the perfect time to do it.

And I can see Cody refusing to turn heel if he wasn’t going to get the title shot.
