Question:

How do you guys feel about games where you're not allowed to claim? The game I'm planning to do, I was thinking of maybe doing this. Reason being is I think it matches the theme of the show, and I would very much like that mystery element in my game. I also would like it to be more focused on play rather than claims.

My only concern is this might make it a bit too easy for Mafia, or it might be a bit too unfair for Town. Mafia wouldn't have to worry about fake claims.

Does this sound boring? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

I like character claiming not being allowed, Poyser and I had a convo about this the other day actually. It's refreshing bc you don't have to worry about your character as scum and as town don't have to worry about dumb character spec fucking you up.

I think the problem with not being able to claim your role - is if you have a role like cop. and you have two reports of mafia. you can't out your report without claiming.

No cop then.
Or make cop be able to send message to another user via the host.
I think no claiming takes the game to a whole different level.

Just make everyone vanilla and then make them earn things on a daily basis through a vote mechanic if you are worried about claiming. So each day phase someone can be voted to earn something it maybe to ask they'd a question like how many mafia there are, a BP or save, a one time investigation. That way people have to make reads more and no one has to claim anything the game mod chooses what can be earned each day phase and the whole group of people vote on who gets the power role. Mafia still gets their kill each night. You can change how the information is given based upon who gets voted to earn the power.

Im not massively a fan of no claiming in general because yeah it makes putting results out there very hard. Towns strongest weapon imo is PoE and thats next to impossible without being able to put any rolespec whatsoever

If you want it to be harder without being a shit show, I'd just make the game largely vanilla. That way whoever has results/is a strong role can out them, but poe becomes harder if you're trying to decipher between 8 vanillas or whatever lol

Limiting the number of claims per day phase is also an option so that massclaiming can't happen

I definitely agree on mass claim. I was dumbfounded when someone first told me you guys do that.

And also on character claiming. Especially on a setup perspective. It's hard trying to leave out characters that can be used as fakes. That won't suck.

Appreciate the feedback ya'll.

From what I've gathered here it would be better to just do away with character claiming, but keep role claiming. This is most likely what I'll be doing for my game.

I am not a big fan of flavour/character hunting and scum getting caught on those reasons is really cheap.

From what I've seen in my year of playing it's often town that gets burned by it bc people think they've slipped with their flavor more often than scum actually slipping but that sucks as well for the same reasons
