I remember them doing that on Smackdown in 2003 where Undertaker was against Big Show I believe and if he won he got any match he wanted and every time he thought he won Paul Heyman changed the rules until Taker won and instead of Brock for the title he chose Vince for that Buried Alive match

Personally I just think it makes Cody more of a geek that he needs old legends to help him out to win rather than guys that he actually is aligned with: Sami, Jey, KO, etc.
