Is this four letter word bundled around too much nowadays? Has it lost the meaning it once had? How much do you use this word?

discuss.

What I find to be the problem is people mistaking love for comfort. There are a great many people out there who choose comfort over love and it is in doing so that they become very selfish. In fact, there's nothing more selfish than staying in a relationship out of comfort rather than love. I'd rather be uncomfortably seeking true love than comfortably avoiding it.

But what is true love? I believe I have the answer.

True love is a teddy bear. It's always there, to laugh with, to cry into, its a friend that will never leave your side and one that will listen to you without passing judgement. It's the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you kiss goodnight. You never have to worry about it leaving, because its yours and yours alone. It's incapable of breaking your heart, incapable of deception. It's the one thing that will be by your side no matter what you've done. Yes, true love is a teddy bear, and sometimes its as close as the one you slept with as a child. The only difference is, no one can buy you this particular teddy bear...you have to earn it for yourself.

I wrote that for my wife before we were married and its printed and framed in our bedroom.

I'm 16 so I've really yet to find true love. Maybe later though.

the best advice is love yourself first. i love god and myself. i love myself enough not to jump into anything. i love myself so much i would not just have sex with anybody. i love myself to be patient. my true loves right now are football, baseball, and school. girls like me, but i love myself so much i am not just jumping into a relationship just cause i am lonely.

wow, this thread got pretty deep pretty quick.

Personally, I find the word to be overused. It once had great meaning and affection (not to say it doesn't now at times) but it gets bundled around at such common occurrences (I LOVE YOUR SHOES!!!!) that we now need a new word to replace it.

Is precisely that the reason why I study Spanish. In Spanish you have so many words to mean almost the same... for instance for what in English you use LOVE in Spanish you could use:

1. Amar (translation of love)
2. Querer
3. Adorar
4. Admirar

that way in Spanish when we refer to objects, instead of people we mostly say "Adoro tus zapatos" (using LB's example). But to people we can use the word in grades... "Te admiro" if it is just that, admiration... "Te Quiero" if it's a feeling but not as deep or strong as to say "Te Amo" or "Te Adoro". So for that Spanish has an advantage in overusing a word or not.

Now on to the topic, for me those four letters have a special meaning and I don't tell it to anyone or anything (first for the reasons above mentioned and secondly because I don't feel I need until the right person comes by). I know that most of the time people my age or younger confuse LOVE with sex or anything else... so I get where the overuse of the word comes from.

Yes, this word is used way too often thes days, and is more often than not mistaken foreither, obsession or fear of being alone. To be honest, when I look back at our history as humanoids, I really don't think many relationships have been bound, or even started, with "Love".

Look back at earlier civilizations (and even today) people were forced to marry people they really didn't know or even want to have relationship with. There were even some political structures that gave men a wife, so that the threat of rebellion would be limited due to the men of the population be satisfied with a mate.

I could go on and on but who really wants to read me going off on a non existant emotion anyway?

Me... I like to read the opinions other's may have about every single thing and the explanation they have for such opinion. That way I learn more.

Love is one of the hardest things to explain... It can take so many forms and appear to be everything you want it to be, but end up being tragedy. Love can make you and love can break you at the same time.

I thought I was in love when I was 18, because I had found the one person who really made me happy, but that was because I was young, and went running when the door was open and I became of legal age.

I really fell in love when I was 19, because I have been with the same person for 6 1/2 years now. We have been through some rough times when I thought it was not going to last, and it has. Just the moment that I gave up, he was there to pick me up back on my feet and for that, I know I am in love.

Love sucks, its given me some of my worst moments in life, and none of my best. I know the difference between being in love with someone, and loving someone. And love is a word that is taken far too lightly for so many people. I use it so very very sparingly, such as when i feel it truely needs to be said.

Anyway, im gonna go cheer myself up before i get depressed again
