According to the creator he was based off Amazing Man. The martial arts comics were published during the Bruce Lee craze but neither Iron Fist nor Master of Kung Fu were expressly based on Lee. If anything, Master would be more based on Lee seeing as he was actually based on David Carradine's character from Kung Fu, a character that Lee should have played.

Fact is the character is white in the comics. They followed suit in the show. It isn't some crappy retcon and they changed it just for the sake of changing it.

Like with Heimdall in Thor. So yeah, white characters so get replaced.

I believe they did the right thing casting an actor that looks the part. If he doesn't know martial arts before the role he will after it. That's good enough. All we need is a good actor. The rest will take care of itself.
