So yesterday I got a chance to try the demo they had at FanExpo, after waiting for an hour to play a 90 second fight.
If anyone remembers KI or KI: Gold, do not get your hopes up. Yes the demo included returning names like Jago, Sabrewolf, Glacius, and a new Chief Thunder(a name that was missing from Gold, and that I was happy to hear get announced), and it looks as good as one would expect a KI game to look. But after that, the game is no longer KI and starts borrowing from Street Fighter. The one time near impossible Ultra Combos are now fireball+2 buttons to execute, the manual combo system is gone in place of a limited Street Fighter style combo system, and I never once seen a Combobreaker.
Speaking of Combobreaker! I never once heard that awesome voice over they had in the previous games that made me want to learn how to execute all of the Ultra Combos just to hear that shit. This game may do well with people who are unfamiliar with the series, but as someone who played KI right up until I got KI: Gold, it appears lacklustre and unfulfilling.
What do you guys remember the most about Killer Instinct? What was your favorite characters? If you have never played a KI game before, are you even interested in trying the new game? or are you happy with your Street Fighter & Mortal Kombat games for 2D fighters?
