Video: Jon Jones, Daniel Cormier scuffle, fall off stage at UFC 178 media day

LAS VEGAS – In what will go down as arguably the biggest pre-fight scuffle in UFC history, light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and upcoming challenger Daniel Cormier got into it in a big way on Monday.

Following an “Ultimate Media Dayâ€￾ at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for UFC 178, Jones and Cormier met on stage in a traditional faceoff. Things got ugly in a hurry.

The two came together, Jones put his forehead to Cormier’s, and Cormier responded by shoving the champion. As UFC public relations head Dave Sholler quickly tried to get in between the two big men, Jones shoved Sholler to the side and went after Cormier, throwing a big left hand, and the two of them went crashing off the stage in the lobby, where they continued to scuffle until separated.

MMAjunkie was on hand and has raw video of the incident above, which took place in front of a free-to-the-public crowd.

Cormier (15-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) challenges Jones (20-1 MMA, 14-1 UFC) on Sept. 27 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in one of the UFC’s most anticipated title fights of the year. Cormier stepped in this past month for Alexander Gustafsson, who had to bow out of a title rematch with Jones thanks to a knee injury.

That's fucking embarrassing... seriously. It looks like something that should be on the Jerry Springer show, not an MMA media day.

Both men should seriously be ashamed of themselves after watching this. It's things like this that gives MMA more negative publicity than it already has.

I'd definitely put a lot more blame on Jones though. He got in his face, Cormier shoved him (maybe that shouldn't have happened either, but it's certainly not the first time that has happened during a staredown) and it should have went no further than that but Jones absolutely freaked out and charged and started throwing punches.

People say it's a publicity stunt, but it's going to bit far to be just a publicity stunt, I think. Punches thrown, other people getting involved, shit getting destroyed.

It doesn't matter whose fault it is, they're both grown men on top of being professional fighters keyword being professional. Both should know much better then to resort to this BS, I imagine Dana isn't gonna be too happy about this.

MMA beef in general is a large publicity stunt, I saw a picture of Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber hanging out at a pool party from Last Year's International Fight week. It all just works in for more people to buy their fights, and you'll never see me doing that when I turn pro.

Benson Henderson became my favorite fight promoter after this remark he made on his facebook page.

Benson Henderson said:
Ha!!! These fighters trying to 'sell' you guys fights, it's faker than that wanksta rap with their 'beef' from back in the day...I mean if two guys genuinely dislike one another, cool, if two guys have mad respect for each other that's cool too, but selling out and faking what and who you are to try and fool the public into buying your fights, that has always struck me as a lack of integrity kind of move...

I promise you guys and gals I'll never try to 'sell' fights, all I'll ever do is go in that Octagon as prepared as I can be, not save anything for the swim back to shore and do my best...

Yeah I know, but there's a difference between words being exchanged, getting in each other's faces, maybe a little shove and an all out brawl with shit being destroyed and punches being thrown.

And it kinda does matter whose fault it was if Cormier was just defending himself. Not saying he's entirely innocent in the matter, but he wasn't the one that was charging and throwing punches.

So if it was Cormier on the other end and Jones was the one who shoved it'd make it any more justified?

Like I said, they're both grown men and professional fighters. Fighters get nose to nose all the time, Jones even did it with Rashad and he didn't shove Jones. Rampage got fined for shoving King Mo at the weigh ins and this should be met with something along the same lines.

When did I say it would be more justified? It wouldn't. In that case it would be Cormier who really fucked up, but as it is it was Jones who went after him and not the other way around.

But yeah, there's definitely going to be a fine involved I would think. Would probably be a suspension or a release if this were two lesser fighters though.

I imagine Cormier will get off with a regular fine. After all, he's the one who initiated it all with the shove.

Jones will probably get a fine and suspension after this fight, seeing as he clearly broke from officials and still charged at Cormier. One thing's for certain - it's a sad day for MMA, that's for sure.

Yeah, but the thing is in the end it'll only sell the fight more.

Which is ridiculous. I would much rather watch a fight that uses fighter skill sets to sell their fight than a rather childish feud.

Video of them on ESPN after the incident:

Jon Jones is a weird cat. Really freaked out at the face off and then is totally subdued and almost sounds like he's on something in this clip.

Yeah but we don't know how long it was before the video was filmed. I know usually after a heated moment I calm down pretty quickly, I've also had a lot of time in therapy for anger management.
