There are usually only 6 d-men on an active roster. You can categorize them in three ways, OFD and DFD like I mentioned before, and TWD (two way defenseman, good at offence and defense).
Lets take a look at who I think will start as your Rangers D:
4 MICHAEL DEL ZOTTO TWD
97 MATT GILROY OFD
5 DAN GIRARDI DFD
27 RYAN MCDONAGH TWD
18 MARC STAAL TWD
6 ANTON STRALMAN OFD
Now you're best two guys are Del Zotto and Staal. It works having them together cause they're both 2 way and can be useful in the defensive and offensive zones. You might not want to have Stralman and Gilroy together because they both like to jump into the rush and aren't as responsible in their own end. Its more beneficial to have Gilroy to play with Girardi or McDonagh. Usually you play you're best two d-men against the opposite teams best forward line.
