During the interview, Michaels says wrestlers should learn to think outside the box as to not continually do the same thing over and over again. On his September 1996 match with Mankind at In Your House 10: Mind Games, Michaels states, "Mick and I wanted that match to be something different. We had no background together. We didn’t know if we were going to have chemistry. Both of us wanted to make a WWE Championship Match that wasn’t typical of the business at the time. Mankind was an opponent with a rugged style that Shawn Michaels had never faced before. Had we not tried to add those extra elements, it wouldn’t have felt special. I wasn’t a fan of having a definite ‘style.’ I get that there are different styles, and some guys do things a certain way but, as a fan, I don’t prefer one over another. So, throughout my whole career, it always made sense to go out and try to mix things up. One of the easiest ways to keep people from saying, 'It’s the same old thing,' is to not continually do the same thing."
I think Shawn is right here. Though, it doesn't seem like you can get away with doing things outside the box these days.

Everyone from retired wrestlers to Internet marks have been saying this for years.

You do that in a big promotion and you'll be labelled a mark for yourself, chewed out, buried and fired in that order. Teddy Hart got binned a million times for this stuff.

Didn't Trent Barretta or Domino or some jobber continually pitch new characters to creative only to be knocked back?

It wouldn't be so bad if WWE didn't hate everything they didn't create. Unfortunately I doubt we'll ever truly see a wrestler think outside the box.

Pretty sure Ryder thought out of the box and well, the less said about that the better.

Doesn't matter, it was fine for a midcard act. I don't like the guy one single ounce, infact I'm glad I don't ever have to see him on TV but the WWE did a pretty good in sabotaging the guy.

The guy just couldn't connect over a long period of time. He had his shot... kinda... and it fell flat.

Ryder would have failed but WWE didn't give him a chance to because that Cena/Kane stuff killed him first and I think that's what Dale is trying to say.

Cliff Compton was a complete nut and hence the reason he was let go, end of story. Teddy Hart was a fucking moron who would lay out matces then do something completely different, and hurting guys not ready for the spots he came up with on the fly. Don't get me started on Teddy (Anus) Hart.

Bray Wyatt came up with every aspect of his character and filmed the nXt vignettes himself, WWE hardly punishes people for coming up with their own shit....It just has to be a winner.

Cliff "Domino" Compton. I actually made some ass-looking sig taking screencaps from one of his pitches to management. It was crazy. Some super hot chick writing "Domino" on a mirror in lipstick, and him cutting a cutout of Batista's head off with a chain saw. and some gimp pimp with a limp (True story) as his manager. Youtube it, I'm too lazy

Try "Worldwide Dominotion" lol

Ryder didn't even create his own shit. Cena and Miz came up with the concept of the show and all that, and even plugged it. They got him noticed.

Look at the Dirt Sheet if you want to point to something being pitched to wwe and being liked, as it got. Morrison and Miz on every damn show every week

I assume Ryder still came up with most of what was on the show though even if Miz and Cena gave him the idea though? I'm not really part of an argument here though, was just clarifying what Dale was trying to say since people were stuck in "Ryder sux" mode.
