Gingrich vows to establish a colony on the moon

COCOA, Fla. (AP) -- Newt Gingrich is promising to establish a permanent base on the moon by 2020 if he's elected president.

Gingrich, the former House speaker, told an overflow crowd gathered on Florida's space coast Wednesday that he wants to develop a robust commercial space industry in line with the airline boom of the 1930s. He also wants to expand exploration of Mars.

The pronouncements appeared to thrill the crowd of roughly 700 people. Florida's space coast is still suffering from a recent round of federal cuts to the space program.

But how would Gingrich pay for it?

The Republican presidential contender says he wants to offer prizes to help stimulate investment by the private sector.

If I was Obama I'd be laughing in the oval office right now. There's no way he's going to lose to this moron and Romney's not much better.

It appears he's going for the Kennedy campaign strategy of promising to seek new horizons, though in Kennedy's case it was just selling the people on the fact that the US would get into space. Clearly there isn't going to be a colony established on the moon in 8 years, its not feasible from a scientific, engineering or financial standpoint. He should be talking about how he's going to fix a crippled economy and a horrible employment situation instead of babbling on about the fucking moon. However, he is at least good for lulz.
