I need to stop agreeing with you, but I can't here. This is the story of the IWC so far regarding Punk from what I have gathered:
- Was massively underrated
- Word got around that he was underrated, so he suddenly got a LOT of internet fans
- Was the IWC darling with Jericho
- FINALLY got his push that everyone was asking for
- Everyone loved it for a period, apart from a few haters
- It became cool to hate on him, so everyone did
- Now he's apparently overrated on a giant scale
- Cool to hate Punk now, you're a mark if you like him
It's a sad cycle that the IWC especially have (though it happens in everyday society too). At the moment he is hated by many (still loved by some), and it's cool to hate him. I can see it quickly turning into a "It's cool to like him again" type thing soon though. Meh.
Great post..
IMO Punk's run as a "super" face during the first half of 2012 is the main reason why the thought on Punk has changed from him being "underrated" to now being "overrated".
Modern fans just like to support the underdog who fights the system, they hate seeing smiley "Supermens" who kiss the fans asses all the time.
Punk was the guy that everyone loved to cheer back in 2011 when he was a tweener fighting for change against the system, when he was the underdog against Cena, but WWE missed things up big time with the way he was booked after his face turn, they turned him into another smiley super face that keeps winning in same lame manner over and over again, that's why the fan's view on him has changed and now many consider him "overrated".
WWE just can't book a Tweener, and they have to turn him eventually either to a face or a heel and one of the biggest problems in the WWE nowadays, if some main eventer is a face, he has to smile all the time in front of the camera, he has to win countless matches and he mustn't job to anyone.
People are sick of this same lame routine, Cena, Sheamus and Punk, they are all booked wrong because of this.
