SpongeBob sadly suffers from grave Flanderization following the release of the movie, the main character of SpongeBob, instead of being a more naive and optimistic man with a child-like world view becomes just a fucking child, a singular aspect of what his character represented.

The episodes don't take their time anymore with storytelling. The jokes used to actually mean something

imposter skinner doesn't bother me that much but having Homer not give a shit about Ned's dead wife was the nadir of the series for me

couldn’t even get into it myself. But I only ever tried once. Might give the show another go one day

Now it's like a fucking crackhead wrote the show where it's a joke a second and ridiculous facial expressions every second

The whole dynamic of the show for the most part was how SpongeBob's positive worldview clashed with Squidward's adult cynicism. Almost all of us have become Squidward when as kids we wanted to be Spongebob in some form or another. That's the crux of the series.

I never watched it as a kid. Two years ago I binged the entire series and it's legit one of the greatest cartoons of all time

Tbf, Squidward doesn't hate Spongebob, he just hates the fact that he's stuck in a dead-end place when he feels he is better than that, and worthy of something more.
