SpongeBob and Squidward are not diametrically opposed people. The show's humor, at least in the early seasons, may come from their clashing personalities, but they also treated each other with at least some aspect of respect. People need to remember that Squidward is also miserable and that paints his thoughts towards cynicism and harsher language. He doesn't always mean what he says, it's just how he views the world.

Yeah I think he would have always been nice to him if he was gonna die because again he recognizes Spongebob's kindness. He still gets mad at him though to an extreme level many times and probably wishes he wasnt around

Hell, when Squidward decided to move away from both SpongeBob and Patrick, he found the tedium of everyday life extremely unsatisfying and was outright glad to have those two back in his life.
