For more historical context, Birth of a Nation was coming out right around the time the Lost Cause myth had begun to stranglehold Southern America, and the Daughters of the Confederacy had a lot to do with it, co-opting racist statues with public works like water fountains and etc. This in turn gave the Confederacy a more sympathetic look as the decades rolled on and now it's what we have today.
