10 years ago society in general wasn't nearly as tolerant as it has become.

It has been especially in the US. Like Canada we had a small head start, but both have work to do... see the Convoy protests going on in Canada which have a guise of supporting truckers/freedom but has a big far right lean.

2015-2016 with the post-legalization of Gay Marriage in the US and Trump's election I think helped the LGBTQ community try to come further together and galvanize themselves.

I think LGBTQ+ really started gaining ground in the aftermath of... dare I say it... 2016 and the debacle following.

Yep that and the legalization.

From 2001 - 2011 I was pretty deep into the rave world so to me that community was just normal and never treated poorly in our world

I think that Orlando shooting also raised a lot of fucking awareness for just how badly the LGBTQ community was treated and brought a lot of people on their side.

We've come a long way since then, but there's still work to be done before the LGBTQ community and transgenders specifically are able to gain legitimacy within the wider societal culture.
