We've come a long way since then, but there's still work to be done before the LGBTQ community and transgenders specifically are able to gain legitimacy within the wider societal culture.

I don't really agree with the idea that there needs to be an invented word for that kind of situation especially since Latino is already gender-neutral when used in the plural form. Spanish and French have gendered words, but that's mostly for sentence structuring and how easily it flows off the tongue. If the Spanish language as a whole wanted to create a word, "Latine" would be a better choice. To me, "Latinx" is merely a minority of a minority of Americans attempting to force something into the language where it simply doesn't work for a multitude of reasons.

I’ve been a believer that there are nothing off limits in jokes unless it genuinely offends someone you are in the company of…that’s my personal philosophy. Make jokes just respect the peeps

And I also understand how it can be intimidating to people with how much has changed, but the thing is that it isn't new to have a different sexuality, or not to be comfortable with the gender assigned at birth or even to want to be androgynous.
