"The Lightning Kid" Sean Waltman's WCW career may be over before it has begun; immediately after his developmental callup, Waltman failed a drugs test. He received a hefty fine - which is said to be more than he made in the last few months of working the Florida circuit - which he took well, but shows no sign of changing his behaviour. Waltman is known to have been close to Scott Hall, who left WCW last year after one failed test too many saw him fired.

In its continued scramble to find its next new top star after the acrimonious departures of both Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior, WWF has re-signed - of all the people - Terry Taylor. He's expected to debut a more serious version of the infamous Red Rooster gimmick, but I doubt fans will take it any more seriously. WWF's recent signings have been more miss than hit - the return of Akeem and Don Muraco, as well as Shane Douglas playing a Dean - and it's hard to see Taylor being any different.

The big news coming out of this week's WCW is the break-up of the Steiner Brothers. Rick Steiner made a heel turn, hitting his brother Scott with his own World Heavyweight Title, and helping Ric Flair to win for the record-extending fourth time. Regular readers of the Observer will know that this was planned for a while after Scott exploded in popularity on his own. There are no plans, apparently, to have Steiner join the Horsemen Initiative, with him being a heel lone wolf for now. With the Steiner Brothers' collapse and Ricky Steamboat's preference for singles pursuits over teaming with Dustin Rhodes or Barry Windham, there appears to be no realistic contender to the Samoan SWAT Team as World Tag Team Champions. The current plan is to continue the push of current U.S. Tag Champions, Harlem Heat, along with the Heenan Family members Big Bubba and John Tenta, and Super Delfin and Sasuke.

The U.S. Heavyweight Title is now vacant. It has been defended alongside the World Heavyweight Title since Steiner won it at Bash at the Beach earlier this year, but now WCW wants to take it in a new direction, with a heel holding it and raising their own profile. Currently, Curt Hennig, Cactus Jack, and Al Snow are on the shortlist to win.
