So TL/DR: The reason multiple states existed was to please the smaller states like Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Maryland who had no land claims out West. Should they have allowed states like Virginia and Pennsylvania rights to those plots of land, their influence would have overwhelmed the smaller states just by their sheer size. It was a compromise to make sure that all things were equal in this new union.
