At least nobody seriously uses the "It's a gateway drug" argument any longer. Pain pills are much more of a gateway drug than marijuana ever thought about being. I know several people who got prescribed pain pills legitimately, then started buying them illegally, then transitioned to heroin because it was easier to get.
