His in ring shape or not, they built that storyline for over a year. Even if the match would have been shit, just have that moment then solve everything after. The botched finish hurt the storyline more than Sting's condition ever would unless he'd wrestle like Goldberg v Undertaker.

The moment was ruined for sure. And they absolutely should have found a better way to pay it off.

But, his condition was the bigger issue when it came to making him the ace in 1998.

They tried for 4 months, but eventually had to give it back to Hogan. It’s a shame.

As for the match, he was winding even with the little they did have him do so the solution was probably a squash match like Goldberg got over later.
